To Know And To Know
On September 10, 1963, in his first game in the major leagues, Jesus Alou landed in the record books. Not only was it the first time three brothers all batted in the same inning, it was the first time tres hermanos all batted for the same team. Five days later, the Alou trinity, Felipe, Matty and Jesus, started for San Francisco as the first major league all-brother outfield. Jesus played as a Giant for six years, then played for the Astros, Oakland (where he earned 2 World Series rings), and the Mets. His stat page has been viewed almost 35,000 times. I gathered all this knowledge about him after plugging his name into Google and surfing to various baseball sites. I spent some time perusing his statistics and came to know some things about him, but I don't really know him as a person and probably never will.
Right about now, youÕre probably asking yourself what baseball has to do with Scripture. Well, besides being mentioned in the first three words of the first book, Eve stole first and Adam second. God chose GideonÕs team of hitters to smash some pitchers, but He used Rebekah to replenish them, one at a time, at the well. Now, to keep from striking out, IÕm going to tell you about the single biggest hit of every year Ñ a home run called the Bible.
It is estimated that over 30 million bibles are sold each year. That suggests that a lot of pages are being viewed each day. Some people read their Bible to learn about God, and that is good. New Christians need the milk of the word to grow. But when Paul writes about knowing God, he wants us to know more than just facts about God or salvation.
Paul wants us to have an intimate, personal knowledge of the Father Ð true fellowship. That kind of knowledge does not come about by human wisdom. It only comes as the Father of glory, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, reveals Himself to us through His own Holy Spirit, whom He has placed in our hearts. That makes it fair for all, for those who are wiser on the human level have no advantage based on their own intellectual abilities. When it comes to knowing God, the shepherd is on the same level with the scientist. The doctor can converse with the dancer, for it is only through the Holy Spirit that anyone can plumb the depths of knowing God. And as Paul tells the Ephesians, all Christians can experience it.
Paul mentions the Holy Trinity as he prays for us to be given the Spirit of wisdom, which is the full and deep knowledge of God, and revelation, that fresh illumination of Scripture that only comes when God opens our hearts and minds to Himself through His Spirit. Paul prays for the Spirit to bring us that knowledge of God so we may know God and walk through life with Him. Paul prays for the Holy Spirit to do this because He alone can do it.
Mountain Time Moment
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.
