I dreamt I lay in a coffin
My breath grew suddenly still
A church bell rang in the distance
The sun crept over a hill
My head lay propped on a pillow
Above me – a flower cascade
A candle was lit in the window
Nearby a soft organ played
In the darkness I heard someone crying
Silently, somebody prayed
But even as I lay dying
I felt no longer afraid
I saw God’s angels surround me
The room grew suddenly bright
A beam of light shone around me
And pierced the darkness of night
I glimpsed the promise of heaven
A comfort transcending the grave
I saw the Savior of all men
And took the hand that He gave
I felt a love overflowing
I sought to look on His face
The room around Him was glowing
I felt His gentle embrace
Then softly the voice of the Shepherd
Said, “Surely I know you are mine.”
But then the Lord Jesus said these words,
“Alas, it isn’t your time.”
“I care no longer for this world.
“Don’t leave me Lord Jesus,” I cried.
Then a mighty banner was unfurled
And the Lord of heaven replied.
“Always know I am with you.
“With my Spirit, abide.
“One day you’ll live in my kingdom
“One day you’ll walk by my side.
“But now’s the time you must trust me,”
The dear Lord Jesus assured.
“And everything’s just as it must be.
“So think upon what you have heard.”
I woke to see the sun shining
The fears of the night swept away
And I knew in that moment defining
The promises meant for each day
This life may seem dark and foreboding
As struggles and trials come our way
But we can face each day knowing
He hears every prayer that we pray
And we must learn to trust in each moment
And we must learn to cast off each care
For it was for the love of this world that He was sent
So the hope of His heart we would share
