Devotionals
So often we encounter those who feel they have no value, no self-worth. Our society perpetuates it. For instance, corporate corruption has all but erased the pension funds of hard working individuals. Courts, despite the outcry of law-abiding citizens, loosen pedophiles to recommit their atrocities on children. Depraved and unscrupulous parties harass those who try to live right. If you feel you have no value or know someone who is, I have good news. You and they are valuable. Here’s how I know:
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” – Luke 19:10
This is taken from the story of Jesus’ encounter with Zaccheus, a Jew who took up allegiance with the Romans by collecting taxes, often using cruelty and treachery, from other Jews. In Jewish society, he was considered amongst the prostitutes, idolaters, and even the dogs. In other words, Zaccheus was the worst of society. But in verse 9, Jesus brought salvation to him. In Jesus’ eyes, he was valuable. You may not be as low as Zaccheus ever was, but even if you feel you are, know that Jesus sees you as a valuable commodity. Your family, friends and acquaintances are valuable. Why? Jesus does not collect junk. Look how Paul put it:
“For He delivered us from the domain of darkness, and transformed us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have the redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” – Colossians 1:13 – 14
Paul wrote this while in a Roman prison. It would have been easy for him to give up.
But even in a bad situation, Paul knew the Lord viewed him as valuable. See, God thought so highly of you that He rescued you from a burning hell, and as double icing on the cake, let you come into His domain and washed away your sins. He traded (redeemed) heaven’s best, Jesus Christ, for you when you were in no position to do anything for yourself (Romans 5:8). Why? You, your family, friends and acquaintances are valuable.
If you have not already done so, here’s how you can collect this value:
1. Acknowledge that you have sin – Romans 3:23
2. Know only Jesus can save you from that sin – Acts 4:12
3. Trust in (transfer all that you depend on for salvation – parents, money, religious affiliation, good works, etc. to) Jesus Christ - Romans 4:5
If you are already saved, continue enhancing your value by:
1. Confessing your sins to God – 1 John 1:9
2. Taking daily nourishment from God’s word – 1 Peter 2:2 – 3
3. Keeping Jesus as your first love by obeying Him – John 14:15
Friends, God distinguishes you as valuable. He would not have allowed His Son to purchase you as a most prized possession if you were not.
