1: “After Jesus had spoken these words, He looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you." - Jesus begins the "High Priest Prayer" by asking God to be blessed so that He can be the blessing He is destined to be.
3: "And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." - Eternal life is in the knowing… knowing God, God's love, and God's son, Jesus Christ.
4: "I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do." - Jesus' life shows that eternal life is not available through our good works; however, God is glorified when we finish the work He has in store.
6: "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word." - God sends us those in need. He is glorified when we follow the example of Christ by serving and making His name known. Be ready for here they come.
11: "And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one." - A prayer of protection for all disciples of Christ so that we may be one in spirit and one in purpose.
Points to Contemplate:
What is your prayer?
As you stand this moment at a crossroads in your life, what one thing should you pray for? Jesus' ministry was completed; His time on earth coming to an end. His prayer? To glorify God. Do you pray that everything you do brings glory to God? Does anything else truly matter? When you pray for God's blessings to cascade into your life, do you keep in mind that the reason God blesses you is so that you will be a blessing to others? Has the hour come for you to become the blessing God created you to be?
How are you doing with the work has God given you to do? Are you accomplishing everything He entrusted with you? Are you furthering His kingdom in your role as a co-worker, spouse, parent, or friend? Do your actions and deeds reveal His glory and point people to Christ? Are you making His name known? Are you helping people find eternal life?
Are you ready for those whom God is sending you? Do you realize that God is sending people to you and to your church community on a moment-by-moment basis that need to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ? Are you ready and alert? Do you prepare for their arrival? Is your focus on their needs? Are you sensitive to the possibility that each interaction you have could be a God ordained moment? Do you pray for these opportunities to cascade your way?
Are you one with God? Do you feel His protecting love embracing you? Have you experienced moments when He has surrounded you with His Spirit? Perhaps He has sent an angel just at that moment when you were about to slip and fall? Maybe there was a song or a Bible verse that came to you just when you were beginning to doubt or giving into fear? How does it feel to know that Jesus prayed for you? Are you strengthened with the knowledge that God will protect you and keep you from harm? Promise of the Gospel:
Glory. Glory. Glory. Jesus' life was glorified for one purpose and one purpose only… to bring glory to God. And in this same manner, we come to realize that we, too, are blessed to be a blessing. When we focus on accomplishing the tasks that God has created for us to do, the kingdom of heaven is expanded. His Name is made known and His Spirit revealed to those whom God sends our way. All of this is made possible through the protecting love of God provided to us in the name of Christ Jesus. As in the Prayer of Jabez, God answers this "High Priest Prayer" each and every moment of our lives and in so doing, we, as Christians, are unified in purpose and united in love so that He will be glorified by everything we do.
