Happy Mothers Day
“Look at me, look at me!!!”
I recently visited an old acquaintance that just moved back to town. When she moved out of town 10 years ago she was unable to have children. However, the Lord in His great ways blessed her with children. Five to be exact!!!
What a blessing they are! When I showed up it was obvious that they were going to take advantage of the extra arms to hug them, extra ears to hear them and extra eyes to see them. One of the girls in particular left a thought provoking impression on me. When I would turn my attention on to one of the other children, her big brown eyes would meet closely with mine and she would say, “look at me, look at me!” and then I could see her mind racing to find something to say to keep my attention on her.
As I drove away I thought about what a challenge it must be to divide the hours and the energy of the day into being a wife, mom of five, housekeeper, and then find time for your own needs. I thought about my own responsibilities, a wife, mother of two, a home to keep, a part-time job, other outside ministry responsibilities and other people wanting my attention. It is overwhelming to think about. However as I thought on this, I began to think about the omnipotence of God. What a joy it is to know that I have a heavenly Father who is always there, I never have to draw His attention from anyone or anything. Inever have to say "Look at me, look at me." He is only a whisper away at any give moment.
Isaiah 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer
Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me and I will hear you and show you great and mighty things you knew not.
Zechariah 1:39 …The shall call on my name and I will hear them.
He is omnipresent. We in our infinite minds, cannot comprehend this, Yet in His word very plainly gives us this truth. So back to the eyes of our children who need undivided attention. How do we fulfill this great purpose and gift of mother hood in a way that is pleasing to the Lord without failing our responsibility?
As I meditated on Psalm 89:33-34 I realize some great promises that ONLY the Lord can fulfil.
Psalm 89:33-343 Nevertheless, my loving kindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone from my lips.
These verses are packed full of great and precious promises.
God is telling us…"I will never remove my loving kindness from you no matter what, I will always be faithful to you and never fail you in any way shape or form, When I make a promise it is as good as done with no question, anything that comes from my lips will not change, I will never have to come back to you and say I changed my mind!"
As much as I know we all want to be able to make these promises and do the best we can to fulfil them, can we say this to anyone? Can we look into the eyes of our children and tell them these things. No, we were never meant to fulfill all of that. As we want desperately to fulfil the role as a mother to our children and try will all that is in us and with the Lords strength to be all that we ought. There will be times that in our human flesh we will fail.
When our children are saying "look at me, look at me" in their own unique ways, Take the time to look at them and give them the undivided attention needed. But when the time comes and we fail to do this at no fault of our own, it is then we take the responsibility of teaching them God dependence and point them to the Savior. As we develop this relationship of dependence on the Lord, they will learn from our example to put their expectations on the Lord. We can take these opportunities to point them to the one who can and will supply their every need. We must obey God in this area as we love our children and we want to, but we also must allow Him to fill in the gaps where our human nature will fail so our children will trust in the Lord with all their heart, and be completely dependant on Him.
Have a great Mothers Day

Ah Lisa ... this made me smile. The "Look at me!" thing doesn't stop as they grow older. They may not say it exactly, but they still act it out. Very wise advice for parents ... and Happy Mother's Day to you too! With love, Deb
