Becky, More Bounce for the Ounce
Becky, More Bounce for the Ounce,
‘I shaved my legs today.’
but I know
it was a defining moment.
I know about defining moments.
Looking back, that was it,
that was the moment when…
When you shaved your legs?
Yeah, laugh if you like.
You mean Becky More Bounce for the Ounce, Becky?
Yeah, that one.
This was no act of beautification
This was affirmation
Spirit tentatively turning out
‘Grief is unpredictable and best given into.’
‘Don’t fight it.
Go with it now or, when it comes,
as it most definitely will,
it will come crashing.
My friend Becky…
Yeah, More Bounce for the Ounce Becky,
she embraced it
vomited out the ugliness
vomited it all over us
we who love her
because we love her.
from Becky, before it’s too late,
from a friend of a friend,
while you can.
I ignored grief
it did not ignore me.
curled sensuously around my being
tender tendrils of creeper
firming to an
Grafting grief to being
being to grief
Bearing winter blooms
who thought I was wise,
found myself seduced by a sharper blade.

I did listen and learn from this poem. wow! Why didn't I see this before! You are and will always be, a master writer.
Val--Wow! I was doing some FW exploring today, and I came upon this. What an awesome poem! I'm so glad I stumbled into it. One of the most authentic things I've read here.
Val, Your poetry, and especially this piece is amazing! I love how you use subtleties to nail the meaning. I rarely write in free verse style, because it is intimidating to me. It is so rarely well-done. You are a master!
Wow! Some amazing imagery there! What an interesting and accurate picture of grief.
