Lately, McDonald's has not enjoyed the usually positive bottom
line. However, we need to be grateful to McD for being "the
bathroom of the world." How many times have you seen folks
sheepishly enter and only use the bathroom without buying
anything. Thanks, Mac's -- you're the traveler's friend.
In our community we have one of those hyper-negative churches
that takes more pride in what they are against rather than what they
favor. Their don'ts take precedence over their do's, and to make
matters worse, they take pride in it. It should come as no surprise
that they have never grown. The only place that "negative" is
important is in electricity -- not in church.
Have you ever noticed that those who are the most stubborn about
being "right," are oftentimes the ones who are not actually right?
I've never forgotten this statement by a leader of a music
conference at Moody Bible Institute: "Have you ever met someone
who speaks with a-a-a-a-a-all the authority of ignorance?" Can you
picture that? We've all seen the type.
There are certain basic Biblical doctrines that are foundational to
Christianity and worthy of a stance, but there are all sorts of
non-definitive issues that don't merit a stubborn stand. Oddly and
unfortunately, that is often where some folks draw a line in the
sand and why we have so many divisions in Christianity. If I am
often embarrassed by what I see going on in some Christian circles,
imagine how God must be frustrated when He sees how we waste
our spiritual time and opportunites while wheel spinning over
minor issues. Please don't allow yourself to be caught up in
"majoring in minors."
In Prov. 13:2 (nlt) we find some words that unfortunately apply to
some folks in the church: "Good people enjoy the positive results
of their words, but those who are treacherous crave violence" --
and that violence can be accomplished with words. Let's be good
people and be positive.

Great thoughts again, brother! It's easy to be negative because "everybody's doing it" as my teenage students keep reminding me. Staying positive can be challenging, especially when there is so much negativity around us, but if our eyes are fixed on Jesus (as they should be) . . . .
