The word gospel means good news, but have you ever noticed how much bad news is printed in the paper compared to good news. Turn on a TV or radio and you will find the same, lots of bad news but very little good news. That just seems to be a pattern more bad news than good news, but would you be surprised to learn that in the gospel it is the same? In fact the worse news that you or I or anyone else could ever imagine is found in the pages of Holy Scripture. The terrible, unforgettable news of 911, the news of the earthquake and resulting tidal waves that killed thousands, the daily loss of life in war torn countries around the world, none of this news compares with the bad news found in the Bible. In fact if you combined all the storms, floods earthquakes and any other natural disasters in the history of the Earth. Then added in all the wars and conflicts with all the deaths resulting from plaques and sickness, this would not scratch the surface of the bad news contained in the Word of God. You may think oh I know what He is talking about, the last days in the Book of Revelation, when God pours out His wrath on all the Earth, and you would be correct, that is a part of it.
But that is only the result of the really bad news that I am thinking about. No the bad news is that all men, women, and children who were ever born on this Earth are sinners, lost, separated from God, and doomed to spend eternity in a Hell, prepared for Satan and His angels. Now that is bad news, and if that were the end of it that would be bad enough. But the truth is there is even worse news than that, not only are we sinners, lost and separated from God, and on our way to Hell, but there is nothing that we can do about it! Nothing that we as sinners can do to change our fate, we can not give enough of our money to the work of God to buy our way out, we can not give enough of our time, talent or perform enough good works to tilt the balance in our favor. No amount of Church attendance, prayer, Bible study is enough to change the fact that we are Hell bound sinners. No there is just nothing we can do, not for ourselves, our family, our friends, our efforts just can not save us, we are doomed! So if that is true, and it is, why would we even use the word gospel to begin with, after all it is supposed to mean good news. And praise God it does have good news, in fact it contains the greatest good news in the world. It is just necessary that we understand the bad news first, or we will never be able to benefit from the good news.
You see as long as man holds out any hope that He is able to somehow save Himself, through any of the things we have already talked about, or through any other way, than Godís way, the good news of the gospel can not save Him either. Man must realize that it is because He is a sinner, lost, separated from God, on His way to Hell, and absolutely powerless to prevent it, in any way period! Then and only then is He not only ready, but also able to accept Godís way out. The Bible says the good news is that God has made a way, and that way is through His Son Christ Jesus; we are saved by grace (alone) through faith (alone) in Christ (alone.) Christ said He not only spoke the truth He is the truth, He also said that He did not come to show man the way to Heaven, but that He is the way to Heaven. Again Christ told Mary and Martha that He was the resurrection and the life, not that He could just tell them about those things. In another place He said that He was the door, time after time Christ referred to Himself as not just knowing or pointing the way to Heaven, but that He was the way to Heaven, and anyone that tried to enter any other way was a thief and a robber. It is only through His life, death and resurrection that any person can have Eternal Life, because Christ is Eternal Life.
