A Reach and a Tear
As I get ready to go to work
And my wife feeds our little fellow,
My boy stops eating and beckons me
To come over and say hello.
Now you see, he doesn’t wave me over;
He just smiles really bright.
His eyes and nose wrinkle up,
As he giggles with delight.
So of course I cannot help
But kiss him good-bye before I go.
Even though I will see him later
I know I will miss him so.
I kiss his mother as well
And I head down the hall to the door.
I turn back to see my small family
And see something I have never seen before.
My small son is holding himself up
And watching me slowly walk away.
Suddenly he reaches out one of his tiny hands
As if he is trying to say
“Please don’t leave yet, Daddy-
I’m not ready to say good-bye.”
I smile back at him and go out the door
As a tiny tear fills my eye.
