i don’t understand why
i don’t understand how
but i know that you know
when i want to question
when i want to scream
and beg for answers
i do remember how you
responded to Job
i know that i wasn’t there
when you laid the foundations
of the earth together
i wasn’t there when you called
the waters together
no, i wasn’t there when you
told the sun to take day shift
and the moon to take night
when you called the stars
into being and set the
celestial world in its place
how could i attempt to know
your thoughts and your ways
me — totally unworthy of your love
yet the recipient of grace and mercy
i wasn’t there when you hung
on that tree….
the blood streaming down
washing away my sin
you were battered, bruised
ugly and disfigured
with my name etched in the
palm of your hands with each nail
your father turned his back
while you expressed your
love for me ..through your stripes
i am healed
although i am in pain
although i am in distress
your love overshadows me
it soothes me when i ache
it comforts me when i am uncertain
how could i go through this without you?
when everything around me is exhausted
my friends have gone home
my finances diminished
my family distant
you are there
the balm in Gilead
the welcoming olive branch
my protector, my confidant, my Lord
yes, i am suffering
but my suffering is but temporary
for the day shall come
when i shall leave this broken body
and my spirit shall rise
to behold your beauty
to be greeted by your welcoming arms
to suffer
no more
