One day to the Lord is as of a thousand years. 2 Peter 3:8. What seems like an eternity to us in our Lord’s return, to Him it is almost immediate. In the Book of Revelation, Jesus said that He is coming shortly, but that ‘shortly’ seems like a long time to us because till today, He still has not returned.
The issue about eschatological event of our Lord’s return is a much talked about topic this days. Many talk about the arriving of the anti-Christ, but if you look carefully in the Book of Revelation, you will realize that it highlighted Jesus as the main focus and not Satan. Revelation 1:1 (NKJ) – “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants, things which must shortly take place…” The entire book is about the coming of the Lord, how God’s wrath on nations will be exhibited as to the seven seals, seven trumpets, and the seven bowls. It is only in Revelation 13 that we see Satan being casts from heaven, and his ultimate appearance. Even then, it is not about him, but it is a chapter that shows that in the second coming of Jesus, Satan has to appear to deceive the world because his end has come.
God ultimately will restore the nations to Himself, and we must remember that Jesus second coming is all about us believers being with Him in paradise. Jesus first coming was of an ultimate purpose, to reconcile us to God from the fall of men. His second coming is to restore all things, and to bring the bride to Himself. The church is the bride of Christ. From the very beginning, God has been preparing for this very day, where He will return and put evil away forever, by casting Satan and all his demonic cohorts into the lake of fire.
God wants a people for Himself. He created us for a purpose. He wants to relate and communicate with us, and when Adam and Eve blew away our eternal standing with God, God has a plan right from the beginning, (even before the creation of the foundation of the world) that Jesus will redeem mankind and brings us back to God by dying on the cross.
The price of the cross is necessary in order to cancel men’s sin and presents us righteous and spotless before God. We can see that right from the beginning, God has already planned that men will be with Him in paradise one day, and the working against Satan and the fallen angels is just part of God’s plan to bring about an eternal destiny for His creation.
Many fear the last day. We must remember that Jesus has to come back, and in order for Him to do that, the falling away must come first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son perdition; 2 Thessalonians 2:3. We see in Matthew 24 and Luke 21 that in the last days, there will be wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilences, and fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:9-11. There will be deception, false doctrines and false prophets operating, and scoffers coming in the last days, walking according to their own lusts. 2 Peter 2:1, 3:3.
This is perilous days. We must be careful to walk in the way of the Lord to be prepared for His ultimate return. In the last days many will fall away from their faith and give heed to doctrines of demons. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NKJ) says, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power…” Verse 12 says that all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
Preparing ourselves in the last days is what every Christian should do, because the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. 2 Peter 3:10. We must be ready and anticipate His coming. Living godly lives are what we should do. We must resign to walk in the way of the Lord and never to compromise in the ways of the world. 2 Peter 2:9 (NKJ) tells us that the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the Day of Judgment. We therefore must live godly lives so that when Jesus comes back, we will be the sheep that He has separated for Himself apart from the goats. Matthew 25:32.
What then must we do in order to live godly lives? Firstly, we need to know God and be His children. John 1:12. Secondly, we must do His will in order to qualify as His children. Matthew 7:21. Thirdly, we must desire Him by praying and reading His Word and spending time with Him. Fourthly, we must share the Word so that others too can come into His Kingdom. 1 Timothy 2:4.
We must live exemplary life-style if we want to win the world for Jesus. We need to tell others about Jesus because the world is coming to an end. The battle is on: between good and evil, and ultimately we must prove that we are on Jesus side as we speak, do, and act on all that God has commanded us to do. We must love Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Deuteronomy 6:5. It is only to those who love that will find eternal life. “…Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38.
