The nice weather has made me think of years gone past when in
the summer time the family would make home made ice cream.
I can remember, that the big decision to make was, what flavor
to make. I loved strawberry, but if we made chocolate or vanilla, I
wasn't disappointed either!
After Mom would get the ingredients mixed together, she would
put it into the ice cream maker. Dad would take it outside and pour ice in
between the bucket and the ice cream container. Then he would pour rock
salt all over the ice to help melt the ice and I would start turning
that crank! I loved to turn to that crank!
I would turn that crank for what seemed like forever and then
for reasons I didn't understand, the cranking would get harder and
harder! Finally Dad would have to take over and finish the process.
You see, the closer the ice cream got to being ready the harder
it got, but when Dad was done and proclaimed it was ready, the family
would enjoy the best treat you can imagine!
We eventually graduated to an electric ice cream maker, but that
just never seemed as good. I felt like we were sort of cheating the
Life was so much simpler then, I've grown up and have a family
of my own. I go from day to day still turning a crank. It's a crank we
all turn. Just making life work and hold together.
There are days when that crank is seems impossible to turn.
That's when I say to my Heavenly Father, I've done all I can do, It's
your turn to crank!
