A definition in the dictionary says; "to adjust by compromise..to lay open to suspicion, disrepute". Disrepute; bad reputation, disgrace.
How often in life do we find
ourselves "compromising"? We compromise on our work ethic, our morals, we compromise on our income tax, we compromise in our relationships and now there are more that are compromising the word of God. It's like getting a face lift; a little tuck here, a little snip here; no one will know, right? WRONG! God knows, your own conscious knows, your spirit knows.
To tell you the truth, all this compromising grieves my spirit and makes me sick. What happened to integrity? What happened to honesty? What happened to not twisting things; especially the word of God, just to get away with something, or because "everyone else does it".
In Galatians, Paul spoke about distorting the truth of the word of God. He was not happy about it either. "I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be ACCURSED. As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be ACCURSED".
So, Paul was shocked that many were giving up on God. They were manipulating and distorting the gospel. There were some that were re-wording the gospel and trying to get it to fit their needs. But, he said it pretty clearly; if anyone does that they are ACCURSED! He didn't say to take it with a grain of salt or go ahead and let them teach how they wanted so their ears could be tickled and they could get away with sin. He said they would be ACCURSED; which means cursed, damnable, according to Webster.
There is no such thing as being "a little pregnant", nor is there such a thing as "a little sin". Sin is sin. One is not better than the other. It's not O.K. to get away with one and not another. We all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God. That's why God gave His Son for us to have a sacrifice to cover our sins. None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes and slip ups. But we have a forgiving, understanding God. When we come to Him humbly seeking forgiveness for our sins, He is just and faithful to forgive them.
That does not give us a license to sin. We can not change the word of God. Not with a new religion or pattern of thought or by compromising it. We need to stand firm on God's word. Not water it down because it may be to "harsh" for some. It is what it is; God's word. It can never change; the truth remains the truth and God is the same today as yesterday. Don't get whishy-washy with God!
