A NEW TEACHER’S FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
For a week, first year teacher, Josie Bauer, has been very busy getting her middle school classroom ready for the new school year. Naturally, she wants everything to be as near perfect as possible. For instance, the bulletin board has to be just right, definitely not too elementary. Supplies, books, and seating arrangements have to be organized for optimal classroom management.
Sometimes she worries a little about what the students will think about her as a teacher. Does she have enough ‘with-it-ness’? In other words, will she be able to help students at one table and still know what is going on at the other tables. Since she is a first year teacher, will her class be able to detect it and try to be too mischievous? Will her rules be adequate enough for good classroom management?
Those are just a few of her concerns. However, Josie’s main concern is to be the best teacher possible and let God lead her in every aspect of her teaching day. God had answered her prayers about her career and opened doors for her to get the education and certification needed to be a teacher. So now she wants to let her love for others and God shine through her.
Finally, the first day of school arrives. She wakes up with a smile on her face after a good night sleep ready to be the,‘best of the best’. After a breakfast of toast, cereal and two cups of coffee, off she goes with a glow on her face and the Lord in her heart. Josie arrives at school thirty minutes to spare. She quickly goes over her checklist and makes sure everything is in order.
Soon the students begin to arrive. Most of them seem impressed that Josie cares enough to give them personal attention as they enter the classroom. Josie tells the students a little about herself and then talks about the classroom rules and her expectations of the students. All of the students like the rules and are ok with them. Next she shows them where all of the supplies are located, discusses the class schedule and all of the other first day information.
After what seems like twenty minutes, it is time for her first scheduled break. She whispers a quick prayer to God thanking him for letting the morning go so well.
In the next class period, Josie gets the students busy with their assignment in math. She walks around the room checking each student’s work. While she was helping one student, two others start to talk and giggle. At that, Josie snaps her fingers and says,
“ That’s enough, get busy with your work, you are interrupting others.” Those two students become quiet. A few minutes later she thinks, “I guess I do have with-it-ness.”
Before Josie knows it, the end of the day has come. While walking out the door, one of her students asks, “Ms Bauer, how long have you been teaching?” Josie smiles and says, “This is my first year.” “Wow,” the student says, “I thought you had been teaching for several years.”
To some, this may seem like a fairy tale type of story. Some may even say
“Get real.” Nevertheless, the morale of the story is to believe in God, oneself, and let Him do the guiding. Put all of your cares, concerns, and worries in His hands. He will always make things turn out the way they should.
