Devotionals
Just before dinner my mother would say, "Go and wash your hands." As I ran down the hall the volume would rise and more words of wisdom would trail along after me, "...and use soap!"
Every day, it seems, some of my mother's words come pouring out of my mouth, trailing after my own children. How many pieces of her remain, having become a part of me! She passed to me a torch, which had lit her way for a lifetime, in those many admonitions that still echo in my head.
As I homeschool my own children, the torch I pass to them is one whose flame is fed by the word of God.
Like Brother Lawrence, I also strive to be continually mindful of the presence of God. I am especially aware of His presence in our homeschool. It is here, more than anywhere else in my life, that I feel the responsibility to discern and obey the will of Him who called me to this task. These two precious little souls, which He’s given me the privilege of nurturing, look up to me with wide eyes, open minds, and tender hearts. They wait on me for all things as I wait on the Lord. And someday it will be my torch they carry with them to light their way.
My heart is sometimes heavy with responsibility as I pray for guidance; but bursting through that weight like a shaft of sunlight through a small opening in the folds of my anxieties, the love of God works through me to call my children to Him.
He pulls back my worries and fears as one pulls back the curtains to let the sunshine in, and guides me as I teach His sheep to read and write the language of love; to understand history as the story of His hand in guiding the nations; to see the mystery of His love in the budding of a rose.
Not only do I strive to be ever mindful of the presence of God as Brother Lawrence was, but to convey that presence to my children at every turn; to welcome and acknowledge His presence in our homeschool and to let them see how I am guided by His will in every task I set them to bear. My hope is that they will pick up a torch of understanding, lit by God, that will guide their way through the darkness of a lawless society; my prayer is for wisdom and guidance as I face the awesome task of preparing my sons to do God’s work; and my faith is in Christ, through whom all things are possible.
