I was thinking this morning of the colorful garland that you can buy to put on your Christmas tree...one particular one caught my eye, like a string of jewels of many colors and shapes, catching the light, and reflecting it back, drawing you close just to see why that one was so bright. And I thought of our love, how like a garland it was too, with our words and actions strung together one by one, each with a unique shape and color, each representing a different thing, but the beauty of it could only be seen when it was done.
The garland begins and ends with little silvery beads, and added frequently in between... they are the prayers that we offer for one another, at the start of the day and at the end... and so many times throughout the day, helping us cope with whatever life may send. There are diamond-shaped red jewels, with many facets to catch the light, for our love has as many sides as these...and each day we find something new to love, adding brilliance to the depth of our love.
Round blue beads of hope are found added to the string, for each day is a promise yet to be fulfilled.... but the hope and anticipation of what the hours will bring, brings a special joy to every little thing. There are long slender tubes of green for forgiveness and comfort that we need, for each day brings its disappointments, and shortcomings both in word and deed.... the green of forgiveness smoothes the pain away, and the shape draws us through to the next bead, giving comfort to move past the hurt, drawing us closer together, not further away.
There are clear beads in profusion, scattered throughout the string, sparking with a light all their own, for all the words of love, the gestures of care and concern, the little things that brighten up every minute of every day...they lend their light to the rest of the strand, making it all glow with a special light of love.... that can only come from lives lived in Jesus.... His light that is sent from heaven above.
And as each day draws to a close, the garland that we have made, is returned to the One who made us both...and God adds His grace to the strand we have made, giving it such sparkle and glow, one that we hadn't seen till now...for all the beads of the garland we have strung, are all on the strong cord of His love.
I imagine God smiles as He holds our garland to the light, the light that only He can be...and I realize all over again, that it is His love that is reflected in my love for you and yours for me.
