Yesterday, when we went out to find a live Christmas tree for our house, it surprised me that we found just the right one so fast. We arrived at the lot, which was divided in half, and the two sides were as different as could be. On the one side were the 'premium' trees, the fat, full, expensive Frazier Firs.... and on the other side lay in heaps on the ground, the poor Balsam Firs, their price less than half of the others.
But a Balsam it was, the tree I'd been hoping for, it was tall, and even though the branches were folded up and flat, I could tell it would be just the right size and shape, the one that matched the one I'd pictured in my mind. And now it stands in the corner, the branches slowly spreading out, regaining its original shape, each branch spaced just far enough from the others, to hold the ornaments we will put there.
It suddenly struck me how like this tree I was before I met Jesus, and before He brought me you. I was all folded up and flat, hiding out in that tree lot, on the side of the ones no one really wanted. I lay in that lot for a long time, soaked in loneliness and gray despair, until a tiny prayer escaped my heart and went straight to Jesus, Who'd been right beside me, listening there.
That was all it took, that plea for help and forgiveness, even though it was small and weak, and when I opened the door of my heart and let Him in, what a miracle He brought about. He picked me up from that dreary dank lot, and brought me to life, for now He lived within, and He set me in the strong stand of His love, and filled it up with the sweetness of His word.
And the words and the love He gave me filled all the empty spaces I had inside, and forever wiped out the sin and shame I'd carried. Slowly my heart began to trust, and opened up to new possibilities, just like that branches of that tree, quietly spreading out to show their hidden beauty.
When He saw I was ready, the branches spread, just waiting, Jesus knew it was time to transform me again, to a new place, a new love, my life was to begin again! He brought you into my life, and it was like you were laden with all the bright decorations of love and delight, and you changed me so completely, adding lights, ornaments and tinsel - my dream come true, my heart was yours, and with joy overflowing I became your wife.
Our love is so strong, for it stands firm in Jesus, and His word flows in the center of our lives, bringing out what is good and forgiving each others mistakes. Each day dawns, like Christmas come anew, a fresh green tree that we can decorate.....and every day we adorn it with love, for your love's fulfilled in me, as mine is in you!
