Away In A Manger…What’s In Your Wallet?

“Charley, we need to get a bigger house. I’m sick and tired of having to share the den with your computer stuff and the boys need a spare room to make into a game room; they are getting crowded out of their rooms by all their games and toys they have.

“Well sweetheart, we just can’t afford a bigger place right now. Perhaps after the first of the year when I get the raise from $80,000 to $$95.000, we might be able to move up.”

“Look Charley, If you would stop giving so much money to the church and helping all those deadbeats, we would be able to afford a much bigger house.”

“Now Honey, I only gave $300.00 to the church this year. You know we are obligated to help out a little with the expenses there, and I did give $5.00 to that lady who had to feed her starving children. You don’t begrudge that, do you?”

Away in a manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

“Momma, it’s so cold. I’m freezing out here.”

“I know, Sally, snuggle up to me and I will wrap you in my coat with me. Here pull this cardboard box over you. It will help block the freezing wind.”

“Momma, why do we have to sleep in the doorway of this business?”

“Oh Sally, I am so sorry. Your Dad deserted us and we lost the house to the mortgage company. We didn’t have anyone to take us in. Not even our church would help us find a place to live. Don’t worry, Sally, Oh…oh, look at that beautiful bright star. My sweet baby girl, God is watching over us.”

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

“Robert, turn down that big screen TV, you will wake the baby. If he wakes up crying, I’m going to knock you up side the head. Do you hear me, ROBERT?”

“Yea…yea…yea, you are always belly-aching about something. The baby…the baby…the baby, I am sick of hearing about that spoiled brat. I’m going down to my friend’s house to watch TV. He has a 52” set, anyway.”

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
“Brenda, you love me don’t you”

“Why, yes, Bobby, you know I love you.”

“Well, if you love me you will show me. I have physical needs and we have been dating for two weeks now. I love you and I want to have sex with you.”

“Bobby, it’s too soon, I’m only fourteen, and someone may find out.”

“Oh, don’t think negative. I will be with you always. I love you. Nobody but you and I will ever know. You don’t want me to have to go to someone else for my needs, do you?”

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
'Til morning is nigh.

“Please don’t leave me. I can’t make it without you. We have been married for twenty-three years. The kids and I need you. You promised to love me and stay with me forever.”

“Well, I guess promises are made to be broken. I just don’t love you any more and I want to be free, I deserve it after being tied down for all these years. Deal with it!”

Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

“Daddy, what will heaven be like? Will there be other children in heaven?”

“Yes, Pumpkin, heaven will be filled with lots of children. Don’t be afraid, God will take very special care of His children.”

“I’m not afraid, Daddy. I see Jesus standing beside you with His arms reaching out to me. Can I go now, Daddy?”

“ Yes, my precious Pumpkin, I give you back to the One you created you, who will not leave you or forsake you.”

“I love you Daddy, bye for now, I will be waiting for you. Merry Christmas Daddy, bye……

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there

I can hear your hearts cry Lucian as I read this beautiful article. I know how you feel. I have been working hard trying to find help for a young lady in the county jail that is trying to starve herself to death. I am so angry at the system that has no compassion . I discovered yesterday that they do not even have enough evidence to hold her yet she was just forgotten by her public defender. Hopefully they will let her out today if she is strong enough to leave and has any place to go to. How sad that some have so much and yet have no compassion for one hurting so badly. Thanks so much for your reminder to reach out to those in need. Now this is long! God Bless you Lucian

Lucian, you've done it again! This piece left me breathless! It truly does say it all, from the title, to each situation, to the words of that classic Christmas song. Tears flowing freely... awesome! Love, Lynda

Lucian, this beautiful piece shows a heart that has walked 'where angels fear to tread.' It reflects so beautifully the Father's heart that should be evident in each of us, that should reach out to make a difference in our own world....may God grant each of us the wisdom to see how we can be His hands and feet. Thank you for the honesty of these words and the love-filled heart that wrote them. You teach us so much.....

Okay, Lucian, when I can stop weeping enough to see, I'll give you a fair critique --- What love, what promise, what peace! Beautiful! Creative! --- Okay, not so fair because I don't have the words to do this piece justice. I can hear this on the radio! Yes, and the classical "Away in a Manger" music playing softly behind the voices of those speaking until the verses come up... and then ringing out to give the world a picture of our blessed Savior. Long critique, I know, but I'm at awe here. This piece just blew me away.

Thank you Treava for your sweet comments. I cried the whole time I was writing this as I contemplated all the pain this world is in. Trish and I had just spent time with a single mother with two teenage daughters whose ex had stopped paying child support and she was about to lose her house. We are able to get her through this mess, but it broke my heart to see people like her go hurting with all the extravagance God’s people are wrapped up in. A car sets in the driveway, driven on rare occasions, while a single mother walks to work in the rain. A 52” TV screen glares at some children, while other children go to bed hungry. How much food would that TV buy? A mentally challenged man huddles under a cardboard box, in an alleyway for warmth, while passerby’s spit on him and poke fun at his dilemma. It hurts, Treava, it hurts so much!
