Others of the Levites, all of whom were skillful with instruments of music. -2 Chronicles 34:12 (NKJV)
Skillfulness. It was a requirement for those who were to offer songs and music of praise before the Ark of the Covenant --the manifest presence of God-- that King David had newly brought back to Israel.
Yet, skillfulness here is not just about doing well what you do. In the original language, skillful carries with it thoughtfulness and wisdom. For example, it is one thing to craft a magnificent table fit for a king; it is another thing to craft a magnificent table for a specific king in mind. The former can use skill, the latter uses skill thoughtfully and wisely. This was the attitude called for in the verse above.
When we use our skills in the work or ministry that we do, let us not just use them to produce something of excellence. But let us use them to produce something of excellence that is worthy of the King of kings, our Lord Jesus.
By this we declare His glory and majesty. There is no better testimony.
