Encouragement
It’s Sunday morning and it has been snowing since last night. Knowing I am not a good driver when it comes to several inches of snow, I decided to stay home and worship God. It has been quite peaceful as the family has all left from the holiday visit. I reflect back on recent days of laughter and food, alright - lots of food, and meaningful conversation.
Yesterday, I had taken my son and grandson up to the mountain to enjoy the scenery and some time together. As we neared the national park it was apparent this snowstorm was coming in. I had failed to listen to the weather report and surmised my own weather predictions on the present sunshine of the day. As we entered the Rocky Mountain National Park the snow was lightly falling. As we continued to drive into the park towards one of my favorite destinations, the snow began thickening and the roads were soon blanketed with a fresh dusting.
We reached the final destination in time to be encompassed by blizzard conditions. Many other travelers were there as well and most of them had ski gear. My son took my grandson out to see the sights as I made a dash for the facilities at hand. In just moments they were running back towards the car as Christopher my grandson kept saying, “Grandma it’s cold out here!” We all got back in the car and started our decent to the village outside of the park in hope of getting a slice of hot pizza.
Driving back towards the village, it was all the more apparent that we were going to be caught in this storm all the way home. We arrived at the pizza shop and all got out for a small lunch before continuing on the next hour journey down the canyon. After eating we all scurried back into the car and took off in hopes to be home in an hour. Well, plans did not go as expected. There was a traffic jam all the way down the canyon which moved at a snails pace of 10 miles an hour. It was almost 3:00 in the afternoon and the snow was falling very heavily now. This is when the trip got interesting.
I don’t know if you have ever been around very inquisitive children before, but Christopher at the age of five is the only young man I know who can ask questions incisively and persistently. As traffic came to a stand still several times down the canyon and the sky became dark, it had become slightly irritating. My son and I kept looking at each other – running out of patience due to the traffic and the non-stop questions.
The windshield wiper wasn’t working as well as it should, so I had to turn up the heat on the hottest setting to keep the window clear. We had to crack open the side windows just to breathe. I got a glance at my face in the rearview mirror and it looked red like I had been standing on an island beach for hours. Oh how I wish that would have been true! Our one hour drive turned into three and a half hours. Christopher kept asking, “Are we out of the mountains yet?” This was the most asked question of the afternoon which was carefully interjected between other questions so you would never suspect its coming. Finally as patient as I could be, I replied, “Christopher, when we get out of the mountains, Grandma will let you know. So, please don’t ask me that again, ok?” “Ok, Grandma,” was his reply.
By the time we reached home I was worn out. I felt like I too was melting and that you could pour me in through the keyhole at the front door. Gaetan my husband got one look at me and said, “You want to go out to dinner?” My son and grandson had left to meet up with other friends, so off to dinner we went.
After a nice quiet dinner we decided to go pick up a few things at the store and head home. As we entered the check out lane the checker was discriminately handling each item like it was glass. The women in front of us had a loaded buggy with all sorts of Christmas decorating items. Twenty minutes later we were still waiting for the clerk to finish wrapping every item individually and place them at the speed of a sloth inside another buggy. I looked all around trying to find another place for us to check out. Here in this huge store were twenty-seven check-out lanes, but only four were open! Ah, yes..you have guessed it… they were all backed up clear out into the shopping aisles as well. Here was another lesson in patience in which I dare never pray for. Later that evening, my son and I were in the kitchen visiting. I laughed telling him about it and also realizing that I am the only common denominator in both incidences of the day regarding the need for patience. I threw up my hands and looked towards the heavens and declared, “Lord it is me, have Your way!”
Today as I steal a way a few quiet moments to read His Word and to rest in His embrace, I am comforted in knowing I have a God who loves me unendingly. He has given me a hope to continue desiring Him. Though I may not like some of life’s lessons, I can assuredly give thanks for His loving care and tender Fathering of me.
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.(Romans 15:4) KJV
