Short Dramas and Plays
Hannah and Samuel:
A Short Christian Play
( Taken from Samuel in the Holy Bible )
( The Narrator may read to the audience
I Samue1 1-2:11 and 3:1-10, in order that the audience may hear God's words as they relate to the upcoming drama. No explanations will be given. Now, the drama begins.)
Narrator: ( Standing away from the action on the stage, down right ) Hannah, a child of God was unable to have children. This grieved Hannah very much, so she took this matter to the Lord in prayer.
Hannah: ( Character is on bended knees center, with her head titled upward and with her hands in prayer, full front to the audience.) Dear God, I Hannah, pray. Please, bless me with a male child, and I swear that I will give him to you, O Lord, to be used in your holy service.
Narrator: Her husband Elkanah tried to comfort her. ( Elkanah enters stage left and puts his arm around her tenderly.) The Lord heard Hannah's prayer, and she later conceived and gave birth to a male child and named him Samuel. ( The couple exit, and soon Hannah reenters with her young, baby boy. She and he are praying to God on bended knees. ) Years later, after the child was weaned, Hannah kept her promise to the Lord and took him to the Tabernacle of the Lord and left him in the hands of the high priest, Eli, to train him for the service of the Lord. ( Eli enters left and stands center. There are also two chairs above him which will soon represent two beds.)
Hannah: ( Taking the hand of her son and giving him to Eli, the high priest while crying softly.) Eli, O, high priest, use my baby for the Lord.( She exits left bravely with tears.)
Narrator: While serving the priest, Eli, Samuel had a remarkable experience.
Eli: It's late now, Samuel. we must get some sleep in order to serve the Lord tomorrow. ( Both go to their resting places. Samuel goes left. Eli goes right. They go to sleep. The lights fade low. )
God: SAMUEL! ( The Lord is calling softly.)
Samuel: ( Runs to Eli's bed) Here am I, for thou calledst me.
Eli: I called not; lie down again.( Samuel goes back to bed; Eli goes back to bed. )
God: SAMUEL! ( The Lord is calling mildly.)
Samuel: ( He runs to Eli's bed. ) Here am I, for thou calledst me.
Eli: I called not; I called not, my son. Lie down again.( Samuel goes back to bed. Eli goes back to bed. )
God: SAMUEL! The Lord is calling loudly!
Samuel: ( He runs to Eli's bed. )Here am I, for thou didst call me.
( Eli looks confused. He sits up in bed, scratching his head, yawning, and thinking deeply.)
Narrator: Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.
Eli: Samuel, go lie down, and it shall be, if He call thee, that thou shalt say, " Speak Lord, for thy servant heareth." ( Samuel goes back to bed, puzzled. Eli slowly goes back to bed. )
Lord: S-A-M-U-E-L! S-A-M-U-E-L! S-A-M-U-E-L! ( Very loudly, very persistenly.
Samuel: ( With understanding he moves down center and falls on bended knees. ) Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.
Narrator: God used the prophet, Samuel, to turn his people from their strange gods. Samuel was very faithful to God. God loved Samuel. In turn God delivered the people from their enemy, the Philistines. Samuel dedicated a stone to the Lord and called it Ebenezer, which means " Hitherto hath the Lord helped us." God sends us leaders ready and willing to instruct and direct his people. Samuel dedicated his life to serving and obeying God. ( The Narrator pauses; then points a finger at the audience and asks slowly and boldly. ) Are "you" devoted to God's service "like Samuel"?
