A Day’s Journey
By: Kevin Kindrick
The sun beat down on two dejected men walking the road leading from Jerusalem. The oppressive heat only served to further weigh down their spirits.
The past week had been truly saddening. It had all started out well – He had entered the city to a king’s welcome, the people were shouting His praises in the streets. Then, on the night of the Passover, He had been arrested by the chief priests; and they had turned Him over to the Romans to be crucified. What had happened to His talk of an eternal Kingdom? What about the redemption of Israel?
Then, to make things worse, His body was gone! He had always talked about being raised from the dead on the third day; and now, here it was, the third day, and two of the women reported His body was gone from the tomb! Had someone stolen the body? Were the Roman guards praying a cruel prank?
Such were the thoughts directing their conversation when they were joined by a stranger on the road. As he approached, he asked, “What were you discussing as you walked?”
They were silent for a moment, as sorrow washed over them yet again at the still-fresh memory of His death. Then one of them—Cleopas—said, “Are you the only man in all of Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there these past days?”
The stranger replied, “What things do you speak of?”
So they told him, “The things of the mighty prophet of God, Jesus the Nazarene, and how he was turned over by the chief priests to the Romans to be crucified,” then, with a shake of the head, “and we had been hoping that He would be the One to redeem Israel. Now, it is the third day since He was killed, and some of the women with us went to the tomb, and returned, reporting visions of angels, and that His body was gone! Then two of the men of our number also went to the tomb, and found that, indeed, His body was gone.”
When they had finished, the stranger said, “You foolish men! Don’t you understand what the prophets have spoken? After all, was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer all these things to enter into His glory?”
Then, as they continued their journey, the stranger walked with them, and explained to them – starting with the books of Moses, and working through the prophets – all the Scriptures concerning the Christ. As he spoke, something awoke in the hearts of the two men, renewing their fire.
When they reached Emmaus the two men stopped at a house for the night, but the stranger began to carry on. “Wait!” one of them called, “Stay with us, it’s getting dark, and you won’t be able to travel much farther tonight.” So the stranger stepped into the house, and sat down to eat with them. Before they ate, he took a loaf of bread; and, looking toward heaven to give thanks, he broke it and gave it to both of them.
Then they recognized Him for Who He was, and in that instant He was gone. Cleopas turned to his traveling companion and asked, “Was not your heart burning within you as He explained the Scriptures to us?”
Immediately, they left the table and returned to Jerusalem as fast as they could, proclaiming as they went “The Lord has risen!”
