My Secret Garden
(Dedicated to My Wife: Mrs. Esther Johnson)
* * *
“I have a garden of my own,
She’s as dark as the silent night,
No one looks down on her because of her color,
For amidst the rows of onlookers,
Her beauty could hold a king captive.
Most loveliest of women,
Ebony and smooth,
Your breath more fragrant than any spice,
Your cheeks as lovely as ‘yours alone’,
Your hair plaited like the work of an artist.
I’m trembling; and eager for ‘one’ love,
As a child is for Chocolate Ice Cream,
Down come I from the apple tree,
What else could have stolen my interest,
Apart from my secret garden?
The green grass will be our bed,
The cypress-trees our ceiling,
We’ll rest together in this secret place,
Darling, for how long shall we keep warm,
For as long as we can count the morning stars.”
