“Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom, since he has no heart for it. Proverbs 17:16 (NKJV)
Welcome to this edition of The Awakening Call.
We know from scripture that wisdom is the principal thing (Proverbs 4:7) – a most valuable essential for successful living. Acquiring wisdom – many will admit from their personal experiences – very often never comes cheap. For while it is true that God gives wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5), yet His pathway to making us wise can sometimes be painful!
Our opening text states that right there in the hand of a fool is the purchase price of wisdom! So, what is this purchase price that is in the hand of a fool? It is his foolishness and his ability to acknowledge that he is a fool who now needs to be made wise.
Our journey to buying wisdom will very often begin with coming to terms with the truth that we know nothing as we ought to. When we are humble enough to admit that there are things we don’t know as we should, we begin a genuine and humble search to discover what is the wise thing in that particular area of our lives. For example, if we discover that our marital homes are no longer a place of peace and joy, we can either tell ourselves that we are wise enough to know what it takes to build a peaceful home and just carry on doing the same things that has threatened the peace of the home or acknowledge our foolishness and lack of understanding of what it takes and pursue the wisdom that we need.
In 1 Corinthians 3:18, Apostle Paul validates Proverbs 17:16 when he stated:
“Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.”
Let him become a fool that he may become wise.
As believers, the wisdom we must seek to buy is God’s counsel and will in every area of our lives. And we know from Genesis 2:17 that it was never God’s intention that we take responsibility for determining what is good and what is evil. God wants us solely dependent on Him for the choice of what is good and what is evil and not on what life, education or experiences have taught us for as 1 Corinthians 3:19 states:
“… the wisdom of this world {acquired from life, learning and experiences} is foolishness with God.”
But it takes more than the foolishness of the fool to buy wisdom. It would also require having a heart willing to allow that foolishness fuel a longing for godly wisdom.
When we decide that wisdom for us is and can only be God’s counsel on any matter, we must be ready to be seen and called fools by the overwhelming majority who have embraced the wisdom of this world.
It takes foolishness to be truly humble and meek; it takes foolishness to stake your entire life on the perceived truth that a God you have never met in the physical is somewhere preparing a mansion for you in a city whose streets are paved with gold; it takes foolishness to take your entire first income for the year and pay it off to a church as first fruit and thereafter relinquish 10% of subsequent incomes; it takes foolishness to forfeit food for weeks on end and spend sleepless nights weeping in prayer asking God to pour out His mercy and save and preserve a people He created; it takes foolishness to give thanks for a provision of 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread for the feeding of 5,000 and it takes greater foolishness to pass a basket of that around expecting it to be sufficient; it takes foolishness to renounce human wisdom, cunningness and craftiness and opt rather to live by the wisdom of God; it takes foolishness to leave all and follow a man you just met on the promise that he would make you a fisher of men. It would take foolishness to live the supernatural life that is available to all in Christ Jesus.
But it is in this foolishness that we buy the wisdom of God. Apostle Paul states in 1 Corinthians 4:10:
“We are fools for Christ’s sake.”
The true pathway to living as wise in God comes only with a decision to be a fool for Christ’s sake.
But in a world rife with those who want to be seen and known as being wise and smart, how many can willingly become fools for Christ’s sake?
To all who read this I say, let’s become fools for Christ’s sake and by that buy a wisdom that will enable us to live the supernatural life here on earth and someday enter the mansion He went to prepare for us in a city with its streets paved with gold!
Shalom!
