Trading Places
Today is October 31, 2004, Halloween, and as I sit here, chills are tingling up and down my spine. I hear James talking, listen closely, thinking maybe he is calling for me. He is talking to his mother. However, Mom passed away sometime during the late hours of last night to the wee early hours of this morning.
Mom loved her children, faults and all. Regardless of what they did, where they were at in their path of life, she steadfast stood by their side. James, an alcoholic, was the recipient of her undying, unconditional love. The alcohol had cost him his health, his job, home, virtually everything. Mom took him home with her. Mentally unstable, moody, soon to be physically impaired, her mothers’ love only saw her child.
When James was released several months ago from the hospital the doctors did not believe that he would live past this month. But, he has, and his health has drastically improved, beyond any medical explanation. However, I have my belief and theory. I believe that Mom traded places.
Mom was strong in the Lord. She held onto His hand throughout her walk in life. I cannot help but believe that she cried out for Him to have mercy upon this youngest son of hers and to take her in his place. She knew that her soul was secure, but, she worried about the soul and salvation of James. As James grew stronger physically, Mom deteriorated. However, she never complained or revealed the seriousness of her failing health.
Since James has been here with me, Mom has constantly been there for him; still loving him, still watching over him. As I hear him softly speaking to her now, I cannot help but believe that she, once again is checking in on her son, that her mothers’ love has crossed all boundaries. I cannot help but believe that only as a mother can; she is maybe for the final time, comforting, consoling her child in his grief and pain.

Yes, I believe that the only love that we can even come slightly close to comparing to the love of God is the love of a mother for her children. If there is any other love that can reach through the realm of the spirit to touch our hearts, it would have to be that of our mothers'. May our Lord's perfect love embrace you and keep you through this time of mourning.
