Being established in the truth that we are forgiven much and loved by God the Father as much as he loves Jesus (John 17:23) are the only things that will produce the fruits we need to overcome outward acts of sin. The qualities needed for this task are not works of the flesh. They are fruits of the Spirit—fruits of right believing that occur naturally once we are anchored in our complete forgiveness, His righteousness, and His love. Once they bloom, these fruits will actually replace the acts of sin in your life.
The following verses list the fruits we need to stop sin in our lives.
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love (2 Peter 1:5-7).
If we lack the qualities, these fruits, the Bible lists one simple reason. We have forgotten we have been forgiven, cleansed of our former sins.
For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins (2 Peter 1:9).
You may protest that you know you are forgiven, but if you do not have the fruits listed, somewhere there is doubt lurking about your total forgiveness. This is God’s way, His plan, His Word. Do you believe His word or not? If what you have done up until now has not worked, the fruits are not present, and sin still raises its ugly head, why not just believe God’s word and do it His way now?
But it says I am forgiven of my former sins, what about my sins after I am born again?
Born again believers are under the New Covenant described in the book of Hebrews, not the Old Covenant of law given to the Jews by Moses. We are under grace where sins are NOT counted, imputed, where Sin has NO dominion. We are not under the letter of the law any longer. Jesus is the end of the law for all who believe.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Rom 10:4 NAS
“For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace” (Rom 6:14)
Where there is no law, the bible is very clear that sin is not counted, imputed, held against us. Do you believe this or will you remain stuck?
…for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law (Rom 5:13).
For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression (Rom 4:15).
For all who have sinned without the law, will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law (Rom 2:12).
For apart from the law, sin lies dead (Rom 7:8b).
This fully coincides with the God’s main clauses of the New Covenant:
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more” (Heb 10:17) and “
...in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them...” (2 Cor 5:19).
The point is: once a person comes to Christ their past sins are totally forgiven, and they are removed from the dominion of the law and placed under grace, where their future sins are not counted against them.
This is great news, great news indeed. Do you believe it? Do you believe God is not counting or imputing your sins like His word clearly states? If you doubt, you will remain stuck where you are now and continue to suffer the negative consequences of doubting this truth.
You are totally forgiven, and God is not counting your sins, Christian. This is the truth that when your mind is firmly established in it, will produce the fruits of the Spirit that will replace sin in your life. Fruits grow naturally when you abide in Jesus righteousness, His righteousness in your minds and thoughts. You can do nothing apart from Christ. We take our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ by captivating our minds and thoughts to the finished work of Jesus.
Love is the only way to truly fulfill all of God’s written laws. To stop sin. The ability to love others much, as Jesus loves us much, is also a fruit of the Spirit that happens naturally once we really believe these truths.
If we do not think we have been fully forgiven by God, we will have a hard time believing God really loves us.
We are to love others as Christ loves us. The Bible tells us that love is the only way to fulfill all of God’s laws. This means that the spirit of all of God’s laws is love. Our enemy will do all he can to keep us from walking in the Spirit.
Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law (Rom 13:8-10).
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Gal 5:14).
Believing we are forgiven much, and every Christian has been forgiven of all sins for their entire life. Will lead us to love much and love is the fruit, the only thing that fulfills Gods law. Do you believe God’s word, Christian?
If we don’t believe we are completely and totally forgiven of much like the woman in Luke 7:47, we will live in fear and under condemnation. We will be unable to love much, and since love is the only thing that fulfills the law, we will fall short.
Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little (Luke 7:47).
Only Satan wants you to doubt these truths. From the very beginning, Satan created doubt in Adam and Eve about God’s word. This is still his main tactic today.
The enemy is the only one who wants us to doubt our complete salvation. Over and over again Jesus said “Oh you of little faith.” He never said, “Oh you of little law keeping, little prayer, little fasting, etc.”
“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matt 14:31).
The key is to believe the truth in the very clear scriptures that tell us if we believe, we are saved, we are righteous in Christ, right with God, period. Never let unclear scriptures override the very clear ones.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
The enemy will do all he can to twist unclear scripture and create doubt.
I can guarantee you from experience that once you understand that God the Father loves you as much as he loves Jesus and that you are totally forgiven, those other unclear scriptures will become very clear and fully confirm the clear and simple truth in John 3:16.
I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. John 17:23 NLT
Do you believe that your heavenly Father loves you as much as He loves Jesus? This is one of the keys to freedom. The apostle John believed it, this is why five times he refers to himself in scripture as the disciple whom Jesus loved.
Once you understand and believe you are completely forgiven, you will realize how much God the Father loves you.
Make a commitment to do things Gods way. Trying to live right by the flesh is not what leads to right believing and victory. Right believing is what leads to right living and victory naturally as the fruits of the Spirit. Do you believe?
