What if pain and suffering is all there is to life?
What if we cry out to God for help and He does not listen?
What if we stand at the crossroads of life and see or hear little evidence of God around us?
What if we have dedicated our lives to Christ and nothing changes?
What if we tithe and our financial picture goes sour?
What if we sing songs of praise with our every breath and sickness still strikes?
What if we pray for world peace and war rages on?
What if we study every line of scripture and answers still do not come?
What if we beseech God in behalf of a friend and they still die?
What if we raise our children just as God would have us raise them and they still drift?
What if we pray persistently and yet our sickness deepens and our pain widens?
What if we teach others of Christ and our church continues to grow smaller?
What if we quietly listen for God's still small voice and hear nothing?
What if we volunteer endlessly and society's ills increase?
What if we feed the hungry, clothe the poor, house the homeless, and heal the sick, yet poverty deepens?
What if we speak endlessly of God's love to a friend and still they reject Christ?
What if we spend endless hours with our parents and yet their loneliness deepens?
What if we are active in every aspect of church life and tragedy in our lives still strikes?
What if we did nothing would life still be the same?
What if Christ never came would there still be hope?
What if God has given up, is there still love?
What if Darkness rules the earth?
Dearest Abba: There are many times in our lives when all we have is questions. We work hard at our faith and attempt to persevere through all things as Paul says we should and yet, darkness still invades and hopelessness still grows. What shall we do when the 'what ifs' in life are overwhelming our knowledge of your love? What should we do when every aspect of our lives seems to be crumbling at our feet? Loneliness, despair, and hopelessness - these are our daily companions. Pain, suffering, and agony - these are our daily breads. We know you are always with us. We know that your love and peace surpasses all understanding. We know that your promise of eternal glory is real. And yet, life beats on with its struggles, difficulties, and obstacles. Lord God, inspire us with hope. Strengthen us when we are about to give up. Fill us with your Spirit so that the deep dark void that threatens to overwhelm us is pushed aside. Heal us so we can become worthy of the love you provide. We are willing to trade our sorrows and our sickness for the joy of the Lord. We give to you our pain and our suffering, trusting that your will be done. When life's troubles threaten to overwhelm us, give us the ability to see, hear, and feel your presence because, without it, we are hopelessly lost. We can do nothing to earn your love. We can do nothing to dig ourselves out of the pit. Our lives are in your hands and we know your love will prevail. In Christ's holy name we pray, Amen.
Inspired by Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 and Psalm 119: 137-144
Your "What ifs" could have ended in futility, but they did not. Your prayer rose above that as you allowed God into the realm of darkness that can encompass our lives, knowing that He alone can bring us into the Light. Thanks for posting.
