There were many things she wasn’t sure of, but one thing was certain. Eugenia didn’t want to get hurt once again and she had her reasons. She had come to know Him when she was very young. They met at church when she went with her parents and had become so close. He would home very often, visit at school and go places with her. But it wasn’t until she was 19 years of age, 16th December 2009, to be exact when she decided to start a relationship with Him. Apparently, He had been asking for a while. Everything was beautiful from then on, His presence in her life was very evident in everything she did. It was easy to tell that she had come to love Him. After seeking His consent, Eugenia decided that it was time to go and pursue her dreams even though everything wasn’t clearly planned. She had always wanted to further her education. With an offer from a school so many miles away from home, little money and no help, she set off with the understanding that He was going to come there at some point. He had assured her that His presence wasn’t going to be missed even though He wasn’t around.
But there she was, after two years with no sign of Him coming to her. All efforts to communicate with Him or receive His help seemed to fail. She couldn’t afford to pay her tuition, lost the job that provided her with some sustenance and the only friend she had was going through a much serious problem than she was. Both being from foreign countries, they didn’t know what to do. Everything was falling apart, and it was only a while before she dropped out of school and became homeless. She believed and trusted that He would help, if anything He would respond when she called for His help. But there she was, feeling like drowning, as thoughts filled her mind and tears clouded her sight. Only if she could find a place to hide and cry her eyes out, she thought. But there she stood in the middle of the street facing an on coming traffic. Her life flashed before her eyes and fear gripped her as she stood there waiting for the worst with her eyes closed, when she felt a tap. She was only a few inches in front of the car. The man neither screamed or yelled, he gently ushered her into his car. Certainly, she wasn’t going to sit back in the vehicle of some weird calm guy who nearly killed her, she thought. But grudgingly she obliged and got dropped off an hour later with a full tummy.
Her messy apartment was never a bother to her with all the many problems she had but suddenly it was, because he wanted to spend some time with her after dinner. A picture of herself and her friend on the fridge next to the school emblem had led to a very unexpecting conversation. A conversation that solved all her problems, calmed the storm in her life and brought everything to a stand still. The man who almost killed her or probably ruined her life was a doctor who was attending to her friend. Apparently, her friend had been to the hospital the day before because she wasn’t feeling very well and wanted to have it checked out. Eugenia wondered why she didn’t know this, but she thought to herself that she might not have wanted to trouble her. Before she could think of how her friend was going to pay for the bill, the doctor told her about the little conversation they had in the hospital. He was going to take care of her for free because she told him she wouldn’t be able to afford it. As the conversation went on, she realised that he was an alumnus of her school and not just any alumnus, but he sat on the board which decided on providing funds for the students. She didn’t even have to ask for his help because he offered to do exactly that. That evening settled everything for her. The person who freaked her out had brought her so much hope.
But she still hadn’t come to fully understand why her Friend still hadn’t shown up. Even though she had decided not to have any contact with him any longer. It wasn’t before long, when she had to go to a place that was going to bring up so many memories of Him. She couldn’t refuse it because after being done such a great favour, the least she could do was to go along with the Doctor to meet his best Friend. They had gotten to this Friend’s house when she realised who they were going to see. It was her Friend, the same One she had been waiting to see. However, she wasn’t prepared to meet Him. Thus, with very heavy feet and heavy heart she took single steps into His presence. She could feel His love, but she wasn’t going to fall for it. She wasn’t going to trust Him or believe His words because she was going to get hurt. But everything became much clearer when he begun to share the famous story in Matthew 14:22-32.
Somehow, the conversation had led to many reflections on the life of Jesus. It looked like Jesus was taking forever to come to the disciples, He said, coupled with the strong winds on the sea and then to top it up, the disciples see a ghost on the sea. Seeing a ghost on the sea is pretty troubling and scary especially when you have no where to run to. But then they come to realise that the “ghost” was just the one they needed and had been waiting for the whole time. Their fear disappeared when they heard Him speak and realised that it was Jesus. And when He came He calmed the winds, relieved their fear and brought peace.
This same Jesus had been with Eugenia in the quiet moments, in the times she spent with family and God-fearing friends and when they got to spend time alone together. He was the Friend she was so desperately waiting for and apparently a friend to the Doctor. When she felt that He was silent and far off, He wasn’t. He was right there and when He came closer, she freaked out and didn’t realise it because He came in a different way which she wasn’t used to. He came in a less calmer way than He usually did. She was expecting that He would show up as a new and much higher paying job but rather He showed up as a man who nearly killed her. She didn’t recognise that it was Him because she didn’t take the time to see and recognise the word of His Lord in the actions of the man. That would have calmed everything, just like it did with the disciples when recognised Jesus’ voice.
He had decided to come to her the way He did to show her different sides of who He is and what He is able to do. Now it was all clear, her fear, hurt, and disappointments had disappeared as she watched her Saviour and Friend to draw her in through the words of the Pastor in the Doctor’s church. Eugenia had no idea how He was going to show up next time, but she was certain that she couldn’t go on without taking His hand and walking with Him. He had won her heart the first time they met but even after the scary situation, she was eager to let Him have all of her love and life. Scary right, because you never really know what could be in store. His faithfulness can be trusted despite everything. The nail pierced hand is all she needed to remind her of His love and faithfulness. Holding on to that hand is holding on to His love and so she knew that she will be just fine.
