“On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers carried off his wealth …………..” Obadiah 1: 11NASB
Mum walked into the room and finds Anna cleaning up the glass of milk she spilled on the kitchen counter and the floor. Before she could find out what was happening, I made it pretty clear that I had nothing to do with it. The joy of watching Anna struggle to clean up the mess was completely quenched when I was asked to do the chores for a week because I didn’t help her out.
It is usually very difficult to understand why someone gets punished for doing nothing when a problem arises. It is fascinating to find that Obadiah’s vision is centered on Edom’s punishment for doing nothing to help his brother Israel during their misfortune. Surely, they shouldn’t be punished when they had no hand in their misfortune but not from God’s perspective. Standing aloof without offering any assistance to people when they go through hard times is not acceptable to God. As children of God we are always keen on ensuring that we don’t cause harm to the people around us which pleases the Lord. However, He desires that we become cautious and conscious about our reactions towards the difficulties people go through and take the necessary steps to offer a helping hand. We shouldn’t rejoice either publicly or secretly when others suffer no matter what they might have done to us. Boasting about how great our lives are or inflicting more pain on them shouldn’t be an option. Our actions and reactions should be guided only by love.
