“…you thought evil against me, but God meant it for good”(Gen 50:20)
At seventeen, Joseph had two dreams from God. Proudly, he shared them with his family. Although he was Jacob’s darling and loved by his mother Rachel, the ten older brothers hated him. They conspired murder, but sold Joseph to Ishmaelite traders instead. Forsaken and torn from his home, traveling to Egypt. Perhaps Joseph cried. Crying for himself, and for his father’s emptiness. Once, his multicolored coat protected him. Now, stripped bare. Nonetheless, he trusted God.
Upon arrival, Joseph was sold to an officer named Potiphar. Soon, Joseph’s good character earned him the highest position in Potiphar’s household. Yet daily, Potiphar’s wife wanted Joseph to lay with her. He refused each time. Finally she lied, accusing Joseph of rape. Though innocent, he was imprisoned. Again, Joseph’s conduct was rewarded and he became Supervisor over the prisoners. One such prisoner, Pharaoh’s cupbearer, was to be released soon. But, before the cupbearer was set free, Joseph interpreted a dream for him. And it came true.
One night, Pharaoh had disturbing dreams. He summoned diviners to decipher the meaning. Hearing this, the cupbearer remembered Joseph. Immediately, he told Pharaoh about a ‘dream interpreter’. Therefore, Pharaoh learned from Joseph that a famine would destroy Egypt. Yet again, Joseph received a high position. The drought was fierce and lasted seven years, reaching Joseph’s homeland Canaan. Actually, the famine reunited Joseph with his family.
Because of Joseph’s faithfulness, myriads of people were saved from famine. However most importantly, Israel’s heritage was preserved. Divine providence overruled. And like Joseph, we can trust God, even in parched seasons.
Father, we know you will keep us. Your divine protection and guidance saves us. Amen.
