Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Ephesians 5:15-18a NIV
We live in a world filled with evil. We must be very careful, and constantly ask the Lord to provide us with wisdom in order to live a life pleasing to Him. Satisfaction from earthly desires is short lived, as it does not provide any true value to the recipient.
We can choose to either be foolish, or to work at understanding the will of the Lord. To understand His will, though, we must have the indwelling Holy Spirit guiding our thoughts and actions.
The above passage does not say that we may not drink of the fruit of the vine. It does say though that we are not to get drunk. Being intoxicated does not provide us the proper judgement to make decisions which are pleasing to the Lord.
The Lord on the eve of His crucifixion prayed for believers that are in the world, but not of this world. Let us remember that our dwelling place is with the Lord. Our bodies are His temple. Let us fight against evil always and advance the kingdom of God.
