Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint;
heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.
My soul is in deep anguish.
How long, Lord, how long?
Turn, Lord, and deliver me;
save me because of your unfailing love.
Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
Who praises you from the grave?
I am worn out from my groaning.
All night long I flood my bed with weeping
and drench my couch with tears.
My eyes grow weak with sorrow;
they fail because of all my foes.
Away from me, all you who do evil,
for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;
the Lord accepts my prayer.
All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;
they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame (Psalm Six)
Oftentimes, as we age in our life's circumstances time tends to bring about certain attitudes, some godly, others not so pious. Have you been rebuked in anger? Have you responded in wrath? Are you faint? Are you in agony? Are you in anguish? Are you worn out from groaning? Do you lay awake at night weeping? Do you often dream about it ? Have your eyes grown weak with sorrow? Are your foes after you?
If you suffer from any one of these aliments, you are not alone. Yes, King David was just as human as you and I. He had the same physical wants, the same physical needs, and the same concerns in life as do many of us. And yes, he had many visions and dreams, resulting in him penning many Psalms.
Wait just a minute, however, oftentimes age has nothing to do with life's distress. It's all in our life style. How we live from day to day. How we cope with certain circumstances, and above all, to whom and to where we put our future, our trust. In (Proverbs 3:5-6), the wisest man who ever lived has some good advice for us all. We should simply trust in the Lord, and leave the rest to Him.
The old hymn "Trust and Obey" also confirms this book of Proverbs attitude, re-emphasizing that we should always trust and obey for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus.
Once in my life, surrounded by some very unpleasant and uncertain workplace circumstances, I took the book of Proverbs as therapy. I set out to read one chapter of Proverbs each day for a month of thirty-one days. This Bible therapy, coupled with prayer, changed my entire outlook and got me through this predicament. I would recommend this Bible-based remedy to anyone with like uncertainties. (2 Timothy 3:16)
For some unknown reason, it seems that our storms of life always come to mind in the quiet dark of night. A famous Christian composer, Mosie Lister, composed a very practical gospel hymn entitled “Till the Storm Passes By.” I suggest you search the internet and commit this well-known truth to memory.
When trouble strikes, we sometimes forget our knowledge of God, too. We struggle to recall past answers to prayer, specific past guidance provided by the Holy Spirit, and lessons learned in our previous crises. Only the present seems real.
"Our minds will spin with future implications, and our troubled emotions inhibit our clear thinking. In our own strength, we lack sufficient resources and abilities to meet life's challenges. So God provides what we need. Our suffering is never a surprise to the Lord. He knows everything we are going through. More than that, He’s orchestrating our circumstances for His glory and our benefit, according to His good will." (Dr Charles Stanley)
I realize no one is exempt from the storms of life. I realize too, for the Christian nothing happens by chance, for we all are governed by the sovereignty of God. The timing of these unpleasant circumstances we may not understand, but the Bible tells us that all things work for the Christian’s good. (Romans 8:28) You see, no life storm is too big to prevent God from accomplishing His will.
Then too, we must not forget prayer. As individuals we should be in a constant position of prayer. And we can also come together with our fellow believers in lifting up like concerns and needs together in prayer. You see our all-powerful, all-knowing Creator wants to talk to us. (Psalm 27:8)
It never ceases to amaze me the way God is able to work with our needs and turn them into something positive. Our enemies will be overcome with shame and anguish, They will be turned back and put to shame. (Psalm 6:9-10)
God will turn those unsure stumbling blocks into godly stepping stones, and God will turn the straw of our life into gold. (Isaiah 42:16) Yes, He will always be faithful. (2 Timothy 2:13) Our God is able to shape every facet of even our darkest doubts until they shine with everlasting light. King David is a prime example of God's perfect will.
You see, as children of the living God, we are only temporary citizens of this old world. God wants us to look forward to Heaven and set our hearts on the things above. (Matthew 6:10) (Luke 12:34)
Regardless of this world's secular mindset which is driven by Satan himself (Ephesians 6:11-12), what our Lord started long ago at the cross (Hebrews 12:2), He will finish in our lives. (Philippians 1:6)
Yes, there will be hills and valleys in our lives before we get to our homeland, Heaven, but get there we will. God’s free grace holds us up and He will never let us go. Even if this old world, as we now know it, were to end tomorrow, the best is yet to come Just as Psalm Six ends, our Lord hears our cries for mercy and answers our prayers. Amen!
Author's Postscript
As life's every day woes hit me square in the face, I oftentimes rush headlong into Heaven’s throne room, seeking immediate help. Like a child bursting in without knocking, here I come. I am simply taking (Hebrews 4:16) at heart. Am I being too bold? Is my mind filled with the things of this Earth? (Isaiah 6:1-2)
Rough as this picture portrays, we still have our promised free grace. Yes, as a child of God, I can come boldly before the throne of God. (Romans 8:15)
You see, He knows my daily needs, even before I ask, and He cares deeply about them. God wants us to grow in His grace, and become mature in Him. (Hebrews 6:1) We must simply step outside of our secular interests, and pray according to His interests. Then and only then will we be blessed for it. (Matthew 6:33)
And one must for all of us. Never let your bad dreams get you down. I trust this simple blog will help you in your Christian growth. God is always ready and willing to meet your everyday spiritual needs. Simply come before Him in expectation of answered prayer. (Acts 3:15)
