SEVEN HUSBANDS, ONE WIFE

Matthew 22:23-33 tells of seven men married to one woman. Sure, they all had to die before the next one could marry the lady, but nonetheless, all were married to the same woman. Not only that, all were brothers. No doubt each attended the funerals that preceded them. Imagine the thoughts of the last one in line. Kind of like seeing the train coming down the track and you can’t move. Aaaiiiiggghhh!!!! He might have had second thoughts about this marriage. Let’s see now, every man she has married has died. Hmmmm? But he takes his place in line. Does his duty. Dies. Who could have seen that one coming? It had only happened six times before. The question was posed. Whose wife will she be in the resurrection? All the guys point at the other and say “You can have her!” Well at least that’s how I would imagine it. The woman was a health hazard. After running out of brothers, she figured there was nothing left to live for and died too.
But the question is a quite perplexing one if you ask me. A logical question, but a seemingly unanswerable question. The Sadducees thought so. Imagine those smug, “we got Him now,” looks they sported. Everyone else failed in tripping up this guy, except us. We’re so smart. Maybe the answer would have been different if they had asked Peter, or Andrew, or any of the other disciples, but Jesus wasn’t having it. Any or all of us might have got out the Law and tried to find the loophole. Some may have made an attempt at guessing. Uh, the first…no the last… uh. Not Jesus. He didn’t have any trouble answering.
“Ye do err.” Smug grins fade. Someone gets out the book of Deuteronomy. “Let’s see, I know there is something about loosing a shoe and spitting in the face.”
“Not knowing the scriptures.” Someone assumes the look of “Why did I bring this knife to a gunfight?” How do you argue scripture with the author?
“Nor the power of God.” But it flies right in the face of reason and everything we know and understand. It’s an impossible question to answer! The Sadducees figured on everything but the power of God.
Consider these situations and see if you too haven’t left out the power of God.
There is nothing I can do. My son/daughter won’t listen to a word I say. He is getting more rebellious and the church is just not important to him.
He is going to get himself killed if he keeps doing those drugs. We’ve tried rehab and everything. Nothing seems to help.
What am I going to do? I owe $1000 and only have $100.
The doctors say it’s out of their hands. There’s no hope. It’s just a matter of time.
Every time we mention salvation to her, she just gets angry and won’t listen. “Quit trying to shove Jesus down my throat!”
Imagine your own “impossible” situation. It is very hopeless without the power of God. I know it is not easy to let go of our own preconceived ideas and knowledge of how this world operates, but to truly achieve peace in our hearts we must rely on God’s power. I have been told and even had these same thoughts, “How can we bring children into this world and ever hope to teach them God’s way with all the obstacles in the way and with the temptations that face kids these days?”
Only by the power of God!

So, you think she was a black widow, do you? This is a great article. We all (at least I do) face obstacles we think can't be resolved. I won't even go into my list right now. Suffice it to say, it's been a bad summer for myself and my family. But God is good and true and faithful. All power is His. Yes, we do err, not knowing God or the Scriptures. May He bless you as you continue to share His word through with such captivating ability.
Charles, very well written message of truth. I looked at your bio and it made me laugh. While I was reading this article I keep saying, this thing will preach! Hi preacher! Well done!
