Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in. “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter. He replied, “I am not.” It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself. Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it, saying, “I am not.” One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. John 18:15-18 and 25-27 NIV
In baseball, a batter is allowed three strikes. After the third strike, the umpire calls “You’re out!”
What if Jesus had called Peter “out” after his third denial of the Lord? Who then would have been the rock upon which Jesus built His church? Oh sure, Jesus could have then chosen someone else, but, that person would also have “struck out” by committing wrong doings against the Lord’s will. A batter is allowed three strikes, but we do not have a set limit of sins we can commit before we are cast out by God. What is of importance is our attitude after sinning. Do we feel remorse, sadness, a sense of emptiness? Do we feel compelled to go to our Lord and ask Him to forgive us once again? This is the power of the cross. Jesus’ sacrifice is an ever-lasting one. It has no limitations. That is how much the Father and the Son love us!!
Just as a batter in baseball does not give up after striking out, but tries to approach his next at bat in a slightly different manner, we as believers in Jesus Christ must not give up when we have sinned. The evil one will tell us all kinds of lies: “You don’t deserve to be forgiven”, “He won’t forgive you any more “. The lies he can speak to you are countless. But, they are LIES. Jesus is TRUTH. He is always waiting for us after we transgress. We are His lost sheep, and He seeks after us. He does not hide in some far-away place, playing a game of hide and seek. He is there waiting, just like the father waiting for his prodigal son to return home.
We, like Peter, are sinful by nature. When we commit wrong let us return to our Lord. He is loving, patient, kind, understanding, and caring. We can feel ourselves washed again in the blood of the lamb, and feel the freedom that only God can provide.
