“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44 NIV
How can we possibly do here what Jesus commands us? First of all, I believe we must be totally committed to our Lord in able to do this command. We must also think of all as equal to us. We must be selfless, seeking the betterment of others above our own well-being. We must truly be dependent on God for all our needs. Remember, while on the cross Jesus asked the Father to forgive those who crucified Him.
In the existence of mankind, how many people have died due to hatred? I am sure it is hundreds of millions. What would all of these people have been able to do for mankind if their lives had not been cut short due to hatred? How would our world be a better place today if they had lived full lives?
How much money and other resources have been required to remedy situations and destruction due to hatred? Where could these resources have gone if they had not needed to be used to remedy hatred incidents? Would our world be better today if those resources had been able to be directed elsewhere because there was no hatred? For sure the world would be better today.
Are these thoughts totally idealistic? If so, it is only because mankind has chosen hatred over love. We all have the capability to love. Some just choose not to love.
Hatred also destroys the one who hates. They are enslaved to and controlled by their hate.
Our Lord knows all this, and I am sure it plays a part in his commanding us to love our enemies, and to pray for them. Sure, even if all this did happen there would still be suffering in the world, caused by things like diseases. But at least then we would not be directly responsible for all the lost lives and destruction due to hatred.
Lord teach us to love those who are our enemies and to pray for them. Help us to see all mankind as You see us. To You every soul is precious, and in need of the salvation that only you can provide. Maybe someone who is our enemy can be led to You through us being Your faithful servants. Touch their hearts that they may see You as we see You. AMEN!!
