How are we saved? This might seem like a trite question with an obvious answer to most Christians, but there are many who call themselves Christians who really do not know how a person is saved. We hear celebrities who claim to be Christians. There are probably many people sitting in church who think they are saved, but really do not know what the Bible teaches about this important subject.
Before answering this question, let's rule out how a person is NOT saved. Salvation does not happen by going to church, doing good deeds, being baptized, speaking in tongues, or worshipping on Saturday. There is no such thing as automatic or universal salvation just because Jesus died on the cross. It does not happen because a person grew up in a Christian home. A recent article by Dr. James Rasbeary, pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Wylie, Texas, was entitled, "Christian Parents-But Lost Children." In the article the writer states, "Salvation is not hereditary. We are not saved because our parents or grandparents are saved. It is not something we inherit." He reminds us of the all-important truth that "salvation is entirely personal." A big eternal mistake to make is to assume that one is saved, but that belief is based on only the human level, or some man-made philosophy or thinking. Dr. Rasbeary made the point that our children can leave home with the belief that they are saved, when they are not.
Now, what does the inspired Word of God say about salvation? The Bible is inspired by God, our creator. There is overwhelming evidence for that, and the Bible says so itself in II Peter 1:20-21. One of the best ways to interpret the Bible is to see what it teaches as a whole, from cover to cover. What are the basic threads that run throughout? Any other verses people might use to support opposing views about salvation are taken out of context. The following passages are representative of the "thread of scripture" concerning salvation.
Ephesians 2:8-9. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast."
John 1:12-13. "But as many as received Him, to them he gave the right to become the children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."
John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
Acts 4:12. "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."
Romans 10:9-10. "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved, for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with his mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
I John 5:11-13. "And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life."
If you humbly come to God and make a personal decision based upon the inspired truth of these passages, you are eternally saved, my friend. Might you do it today.

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
