When Rick returned from the restroom, Ashlyn asked him if she could sleep over at Emmy's the next night. "If it's OK with her mom," Rick replied. He looked at Mari. "Is it all right with you? It won't throw your church schedule off at all?" Mari's church had three services, and he assumed she would be going to the last one, once Ashlyn left. She knew how he felt about them taking Ashlyn to church.
"It's perfectly fine if she sleeps over," Mari told him.
"All right, then," Rick said. "Ashlyn, it's fine with me if you go. Just be back tomorrow by lunchtime, okay?"
"Okay, Daddy," Ashlyn said.
On Saturday night the girls giggled in Emmy's room until Mari came in and told them they had to go to bed, because they were all getting up early for church in the morning. The next morning she awakened the girls, and they all had pancakes for breakfast. "Your mommy's a really good cook," Ashlyn told Emmy.
"Thanks, Ashlyn. Your daddy's a really good inventor," Emmy said.
"Thanks, Emmy," Ashlyn said. "Mmm, this syrup is delicious!" she told Mari. "I love it!"
"Well, thank you, Ashlyn," Mari said, smiling.
Mari and the two girls went to the nine o'clock church service. Pastor Quincy Hodges was speaking about how the Creator of the universe humbled himself as a Man when He came into the Earth and died on the cross for our sins. Ashlyn was curious and wanted to ask him more questions at the end of the service.
That is what she did. "Mr. Hodges, you said God created the universe, right?" she asked.
"That's right," Quincy said.
"Then why does my daddy say that an accident caused everything?" Ashlyn asked.
"Your daddy doesn't believe God did it?" Quincy asked.
Ashlyn shook her head.
"Can I ask you a question?" Quincy asked patiently, getting down to the child's level. "Have you ever seen anything spill, like maybe milk or food?"
Ashlyn nodded.
"Is everything in perfect order when that happens, or is it all over the place and a mess?" Quincy asked.
"A mess," Ashlyn replied quietly.
"That is exactly right. And spills are accidents. And in little accidents like those and in big accidents like car accidents and train wrecks, there is no order. But look at the world around you. Everything has an order--day and night happen every day, there are always four seasons every year, certain fruits and vegetables grow at certain times every year--DNA and molecules are so perfectly set in everything. If this was an accident, how could nature have the order that it does?"
Ashlyn thought about this. Quincy went on, "We have a very powerful Creator who made everything. He made you, me, and your daddy, and everyone. He is also a very loving Creator who died on a cross for the bad things everybody does so we can all go to Heaven to be with Him one day. He never does anything wrong, but we do, so we don't deserve Heaven, but He gives it to us because He loves us so much. If you believe in Him, you will go to Heaven. All you have to do is ask Him to be your Savior and Lord, child."
"I want to ask Jesus to come into my heart right now," Ashlyn said. And she did. She prayed, "Dear Jesus, I believe that You made everything and that You love me so much You died on the cross so I could be in Heaven with You. I want Daddy to go to Heaven, too, so I pray he will also receive You. I love You, Jesus. Amen."
