'Let The Circle Remain Unbroken'
I learned of the saying ‘Let the circle remain unbroken’ from the folks who extended their helpful hand to me in my teen years. I used it as a title, as it best expresses what I am trying to convey in this article. I am the person I am today because a handful of individuals took the time to care. Someone in your life is in need of your help in order to recognise their true potential. Will you rise to the challenge and help that soul?
Today, you may be a Nathan to the David in your life (see 2 Samuel 12) or you may be a Naomi in the life of the Ruth character(s) in your life (see Ruth 1). In life, we travel through a series of cycles. For example: when we are down, we need a helping hand to rise again. So when we receive that strength and can stand again we are in a perfect position to help another person rise again or keep standing. This, I believe is what 2 Cor 1:4 is highlighting. Freely, as we receive, so should we give (according to Matthew 10:8) and that cycle--the circle of love--will remain unbroken.
When that cycle of help is broken, it leaves open spaces for many of our children and young people to slip through the net. That adds pressure to society and it affects us all. The difference between one such child succeeding or not may depend on the help received while connected to you. We are all connected to each other and we have a responsibility to help each other.
Every child needs the love and acceptance of a parent and every parent is given that responsibility. However, not all parents accept and delight in the privilege of parenthood. When that happens the children need to have some connection with parent-like carers who are accepting, loving, patient and consistent in meeting them where they are. Will you take the challenge in being that kind of carer today?
You might be a step-parent, an adoptive or foster parent, an Aunt, Uncle or close relative. You may be a mother (or grandmother) in the church or community who can pass on some words of wisdom to help someone in need. Your connection with that needy soul can make all the difference in the world. Will you keep the circle unbroken?
This is why I do what I do. For I truly believe that when mother and father neglects us, God takes us up through the loving, tender care of others (see Psalm 27:10). If we look beyond our self we can make a great difference to many lives.
Let the circle remain unbroken.
