Often in my daily consciousness a subtle “film” will try to interpose itself into and between my own awareness and my immediate sense of the presence of God. So often I have accepted that development as a necessary part of life without challenging or resisting it. That film or fine layer of radioactive like fallout could take the form of a sadness or an anxiety, or sense of fear or self doubt or countless other subtle but slimy forms insinuating themselves into and blocking the simple give and take of a spontaneous parent/child relationship.
What I am learning to do is to offer up the film as an element of worship, depositing it upon the cross of Jesus Christ and dying to it where it is brought to light for cleansing in His blood that still flows as John’s Epistle tells us “….and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us (present tense) from all sin.” 1 John 1 verse 7. The blood of Jesus is powerful still not only to remove the film from our relationship with Him but also to remove US from the film! (see Amplified Version)
What this means is that we ALWAYS have recourse against the little and not so little bluntings and deadenings of our personal relationships with God, and that is really good news! It is such good news that it is at the heart of the gospel. There is ever an alternative, we always have a choice in how close or distant, how alive or nonexistent our relationships with our Saviour God will be…..
