Introduction
This Bible study as most I have written is designed to rid the believer of any doubt regarding God’s love for them and their complete and total forgiveness in Christ. It is only satan who wants you to doubt your total forgiveness and righteousness in Christ which leads you to doubt God’s love. Satan knows that doubting these truths is specifically what keeps a believer trapped in reoccurring sin and ineffective for God. These studies are designed to renew the mind.
This study goes in depth with abundant scripture to prove that we were made sinners and born into a fallen world because of Adams disobedience. We can only be made righteous, right with God, by faith in Jesus obedience. Our outward acts of sin while wrong, are only symptoms of our inherited sin nature. This is why just doing good works now will not save anyone. God gave man the law to protect us from each others fallen nature and reveal our need for a savior. Jesus came to deal with that inherited nature and tells us we must be born again to overcome it and be a co-heir with Christ. Get your Bible out and study with me. If you have any questions, comments or objections, I really hope you will post them below the study or contact me through private messenger.
Study
God placed Adam in an awesome garden and gave him everything that grew to be his food. With one exception. In the center of the garden grew the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Because God loved Adam, he warned Adam that if he ate from that tree, he would die. Adam didn’t believe God. Adam didn’t fully trust God. Adam didn’t obey God. That disobedience made all mankind—every child to descend from Adam—to be prisoners of sin.
Adam’s unbelief made all mankind sinners, prisoners of sin.
They answered him, "You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?" So they put him out. John 9:34 NASB
But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God's promise of freedom—only by believing in Jesus Christ (Gal 3:22 NLT).
While Adam was created in God’s image (in the likeness of God), after the fall mankind was born in the image of Adam.
When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth (Gen 5:3).
So just like God said, when Adam sinned, he died—he was cut off from the life he was meant to have with God and became a prisoner to sin. It became his nature to sin. We were made sinners by Adam’s sin. We inherited his sin nature and its consequence: we died—we were cut off from God and became prisoners to sin. It became our nature to sin.
Romans 5:15 -19 shows how man was made a sinner and how man can be made righteous.
Here is what the bible says about how man was made a sinner:
“… many died through one man’s trespass[Adam] …” (Rom 5:15b) and “…by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man…” (Rom 5:17a) and “… through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners…” Rom 5:19a.
Here the bible talks about the consequences:
“…The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation …” (Rom 5:16b) and “… one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people…” (Rom 5:18a).
Here is how man is made righteous (right with God):
…God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! (Rom 5:15b paraphrase).
“…but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification [righteousness]” (Rom 5:16b).
…much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of “the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ” (Rom 5:17b).
“…so also one righteous act resulted in justification (righteousness) and life for all people” (Rom 5:18b).
“…so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men” (Rom 5:19b).
Our individual sins are not the main issue; they are a symptom of the sin nature we inherited from Adam. Like symptoms of a physical disease, our individual sins reveal the problem. Just like you would never expect to cure an inherited disease like leukemia by solely dealing with the symptoms, just trying to stop our individual acts of sin will not change our inherited sin nature. As a matter of fact, doing so can actually hide the real problem from our sight and from others, making us look good on the outside, while being filled with dead man’s bones on the inside.
No person under Adam ever had the option to not inherit Adam’s fallen image or be born into a fallen world.
Understanding this makes it clear: no man can possibly be righteous before God by doing righteous acts. We cannot change our inherited nature no matter how good we act.
Jesus was born of God through a virgin specifically so that he would not embody an inherited sin nature. Jesus is called the second Adam in the bible, as if God did a restart on mankind so we would have the choice to believe God where Adam failed.
The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven (1 Cor 15:47).
Jesus tells us that only by being “born again” (John 3:7) under Jesus himself can we be made righteous (right with God). We inherit Jesus’s righteous nature by faith when we believe God. This new nature replaces Adam’s sin nature. It is 100% gift.
It’s a parallel situation:
- We didn’t have to do sin to become sinners. We inherited the sin nature from Adam without a choice.
- Jesus didn’t have to sin to become a sinner. He became sin by choice to take the punishment the law demands for sin.
- We don’t have to do good to become righteous (right with God). We inherit righteousness from Jesus when we believe in him and are born again.
Adam’s sin was unbelief; he did not believe God and forfeited his inheritance. God gives all mankind the free choice to believe, to be set free from an inherited sin nature they never asked for and to inherit God’s own righteousness and the Kingdom of God. God did all of the work making salvation so easy to obtain. It should be noted that while our salvation comes easy, it did not come cheap. God gave everything to save us.
Just think about this for a moment. Why would God be willing to forgive every sin but unbelief? Why did Jesus say “Father forgive them they know not what they do” about those who had beaten him and crucified him on the cross? I submit to you the truth that we did not have a choice to be born apart from a sin nature and into a fallen world is a big part of why God has compassion for us and wants to save us. This is despite all the heinous sins mankind has committed through the centuries.
In Rev 12:10 it says that day and night Satan accuses believers of their sins, points them out and condemns us before God.
What do you think God thinks of these accusations? God knows it was Satan who led mankind to be enslaved by sin in the first place. Satan, God’s real enemy, has done quite a good job of getting religion to place the blame for our fallen nature on the shoulders of mankind. He has gotten us to turning against each other with pointing fingers, judgment and condemnation. To me this would be comparable to us going to the hospital and pointing out the symptoms of people who have inherited leukemia, blaming and condemning them for their condition.
One of the worst things you can do when you have a disease is to be symptom conscious. The best thing is to always focus on the cure. The same applies here. Satan wants you sin/symptom conscious so you will keep your distance from the safety of God. God says you should no longer be sin/symptom conscious, if you really believe Jesus finished the work (Heb 10:2)
Thankfully God is quite aware of who his real enemy is and that our inherited nature/disease has symptoms. Jesus came to save us, not Satan and the fallen angels, specifically because they knowingly made their choice a long time ago to deny (unbelief) God. This life is our first and only chance to do the opposite.
Another way to think about this is that Jesus did not need to commit even one sin to be made sin, and we did not, could not commit even one righteous act to be righteous. In Isa 64:6, the bible says that every right thing we do is at best like a hideously filthy rag. Our sin was put on Jesus, and his righteousness is put on all who believe.
It is interesting to note that all of God’s laws (Ten Commandments included) are fulfilled by love (Rom 13:8-10). Therefore, we see again that God loves us and that his laws were given for our benefit. He gave us the law to keep us in protective custody from each other’s inherited sin nature (Gal 3:23 NLT) and to arouse sin, making it more apparent revealing our problem (Rom 7:8). The law brought the knowledge of sin (Rom 3:20) so we would recognize our deadly inherited sin nature and turn to God for help.
To all those who say it is unfair that we did not have a choice about inheriting a sin nature and a fallen world, I agree. But we have a choice now. If we choose not to believe God, we choose like Adam did and we forfeit our inheritance that is waiting for us and continue to walk in the inheritance of Adam’s original sin and its consequences. God hopes we make the right choice with our opportunity.
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live” (Deut 30:19).
A Prayer
Lord, I have struggled all these years with sins, things I do over and over, and they have gotten me hurt and in trouble. Thank you for helping me to understand the root cause of my problem and my need for your help. I can’t change my inherited nature, but I now know that you can, and you want to help me.
I believe you really love me and that Jesus came to save me from my inherited fallen nature. He makes me righteous (right with God the Father) in spite of my failings. I now trust you and believe you are for me and not against me. I accept your saving grace to be born again under Jesus. I choose to follow you and let your will be done in my life. Amen.
