“And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” Genesis 9: 12-16
I love rainbows with all their beautiful colors gracefully arched across the sky. I can only imagine how happy Noah and his family were when they saw the very first rainbow. They had been in the ark for a long time with only the animals that I am sure were not the most pleasant traveling companions. God had destroyed the earth all its inhabitants by flood waters, except for Noah, his family, and some animals.
It seems like a drastic measure to destroy the world that God Himself had created, but the world had become so evil. Everyone was going about doing their own thing and worshipping idols, but Noah had been found faithful to God. Therefore, God decided to do an extreme make-over but only after Noah and his family were safely within the ark.
Then the rains came for forty days and nights, and the floodwaters remained upon the earth for another one hundred and fifty days before the ark landed on top of a mountain. Noah waited for forty days before sending out a bird, which came back letting him know that there was still too much water for them to leave the ark. Seven days later, Noah sent out another bird and he waited for seven days but the bird did not return. Noah knew it was time for his family and the animals to leave the ark.
That is when God told Noah that he would make a covenant between Him and Noah as well as all living creatures for all generations to come (That includes you and me!) that he would never again destroy all life by water. Instead of a handshake or a stack of paper, God chose to use a rainbow to seal the covenant.
The next time you look up and see the arch of vibrant colors in the sky remember that it is a symbol of a promise God made to Noah and to us that He would never again destroy man by water. Somehow that just makes the rainbow more beautiful.
