Sinners in the Hands of a Merciful God
It is by the sheer will of God that we even exist. For His pleasure and purpose are so thwarted by our sin and self-serving notions. For us to even contemplate His goodness and perfection is a lofty and unattainable goal in and of ourselves. How could someone so high and holy stoop to a mere mortal’s level, which disobeys him at every turn and opportunity? BUT, that’s what happened! (Quote John 3:16-17) God didn’t send Jesus to this earth because He hated us. Jesus is our way to extinguish the wrath of the Almighty.
The creator of the universe looked over the balconies of heaven and longed to be reunited with His fallen creation; the very ones that turned their backs on Him that fateful day in the garden. Since the fall of humankind from paradise, God’s pain of separation only grew until the day that blessed womb that bore the fruit of His divine mercy, and would produce fruit with eternal significance. A holy child, sent to reunite the created back to their creator. An eventual trail of blood that would require repentance and an absolute surrender to His will. This is a relationship NOT for the perfect, but for the ones who wish to be perfected. There was none of us righteous; none of us deserved what He came and did for us. It defies human logic and flies in the face of human reasoning. The world can’t grasp it, and even the lofty can’t attain it.
You think that the world would embrace this holy child of peace, birthed out of the sheer mercy of God by the Holy Spirit, but it didn’t happen that way. A more grizzly and grim destiny for this child of the King was the order of the day. The messiah of the world was hated and eventually killed because of envy and misunderstanding. God again was pained by the sinful choices of sinful humankind. Yet this was preordained since before the beginning of the world. God knew it had to be this way, yet it didn’t make it any easier to endure, even though He was divine. The blood of bulls and goats were only a forerunner to the real and ultimate sacrifice. A sinless spotless lamb, Jesus, the Son of God was sacrificed in the place of, and for the sins if fallen humanity.
We all deserved to die and be separated from our creator, but our creator chose to reconcile us back to Himself. Why? Because of His mercy, Jesus foretold of another glorious event that was far from the minds of the ones who watched Him die. He said He’d rise again on the third day, and indeed He did. There were over 500 eyewitness accounts to this glorious event. Without the resurrection, this perfect sacrifice would have been null and void. This resurrection occurred so that one day we could be too, and we will be. Even today as we believe upon Him and by faith receive His great salvation, He is able to make alive our mortal bodies so we could live unto life, and not death. We can say like Paul of old: “Oh death where is thy sting? Oh grave where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin. Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
Now a new life and freedom from sin is the order of the day. Why? It was Because of the sheer and undeserving mercy of God. He chose not to allow us to die in our sins, if we accepted his perfect and divine sacrifice. Hell and death have lost its grip on our immortal soul. We now have the freedom, choice, and ability to choose right. This is because of the empowerment of God’s Holy Spirit, sent to seal us until the day of our glorious redemption.
Jesus is coming back for His own. Eternity with the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit is inevitable for the believer. Why? Because of the sheer mercy of God, a Father who loved us so much, that He went the distance and then some just to reconcile His creation back to Himself.
The mercy of God,
Is great to behold,
Though we can't understand,
How He loved us so.
We turned our backs,
And like sheep went astray,
We deserved death,
But He sent us grace.
