Christianity is not a fairy tale life. Becoming a Christian is does not connote the ‘happily ever after’ ending of most of the stories we read in primary school- at least not until we cross this terrestrial, ephemeral plane into eternity. Jesus himself said and says in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world”. Jesus had to make it clear that Christianity is not an escape route from the challenges of this life. He had to make us see that this present life is full of imperfections and undesired circumstances but he did not stop there; he makes bold to tell us that in spite of this fact, we must be cheerful because he has overcome the world. He means to let us know that we can now overcome because he has.
What is your first reaction to temptations, challenges, pains, etc? What do you do or say when your expectation does not manifest? Do you complain or do you pray and praise? You see, your first reaction tells us who you are. It tells us who you fear- God or the devil.
Exodus 15 opens with Moses’ song of praise to God for making good His promise to make the terrifying Egyptian army a permanent past tense in history. He hardly had finished his song when Miriam his elder sister gathered the women to sing their own song of victory. The Israelites were so full of their deliverance from Egypt that they failed to realize that they had not yet arrived in Canaan. For three days after the elimination of the Egyptian armies in the Red sea, they discovered that their victory actually opened the door to the next challenge- lack of water.
You need to know that your last victory was not meant to be your last. It is God’s plan that you should be victorious over life’s challenges again and again. Of course I know you want to be victorious but what I am not sure of is whether you want to go through the tests on the way to those victories.
Students know they have to pass exams to get to the next class. Employees know they must pass that promotional exam to get promoted from one level to another. Apprentices know they must do as their masters demand to get qualified for their trade but unfortunately, 80% or more of Christians do not want to go through any tests before celebrating victories.
You need to know that every test represents the opportunity for the next testimony and every testimony signifies your qualification to write the next test or exam and it goes round and round like that until you become very great by reason of your passing your tests. I pray that you will never again abhor tests as a Christian. Of course the devil brings tests to make you fail but beloved, God only allows the devil to test you as in the case of Job, or may even test you Himself as in the case of Abraham because by that test He intends to find you worthy for the next level of your life. I pray that you will position yourself to fulfill God’s dream for you in that test in Jesus name.
And so for three days the Israelites continued without water and soon they began to grow weary then came to see from afar the signs of an oasis which on getting there had a bitter taste. It was impossible to drink. All their hope was punctured. All their expectations were dashed. Here was water but it was useless.
Before anybody could figure out anything, they became as bitter as the waters of mara and they began to murmur and complain at Moses. They forgot that the God who dealt the Egyptians blows including the blow of the death of their firstborns and had even gone ahead to deliver them from the Egyptian army three days ago was still alive and well enough to provide them water in the wilderness. You need to come to terms with the fact that every testimony you have is God’s voice telling you, “if you stay with me, I’d do more than this for you”. Do not forget all His benefits. The Psalmist says in Psalms 103:2 “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:” don’t fall for the temptation to forget God’s goodness else you will be forgotten by Him in your hour of need.
Good news! Moses didn’t complain back at them or start to remind God of how he didn’t want the job in the first place. The bible records that while the people complained, he cried to God; he prayed to God for direction and then God opened his eyes to see a tree or wood, which after he had thrown into the waters healed the waters and it became sweet water.
You must know that something good is in that bad. Sweet can come out of that bitter experience. Those dark clouds in your life can turn to sunshine but it cannot become by murmuring against God or his servants. If you will behave like Moses, God will open your eyes and you will receive an idea that will turn your poverty around. If you will pray, God will send you a man that will tell you what to do. If you will pray, God will show you a scripture that in believing and declaring in faith, that sickness will give way to health. If you will pray, there is a stick nearby that God will open your eyes to see which will end the complain of the world around you. Do not join the world to murmur. You are there as Moses was and you are to pray so that God will show you a way out. You are God’s solution to that global need if you will only pray.
Everyone including you must meet his water of Mara on his way to destiny someday but what you think, say and do will determine whether you’ll move beyond there or not. When the waters of life gets bitter, never forget that the God who saved you countless times before will again honour Himself in your life. This mindset must strengthen your trust in Him and cause you to pray with thankful faith.
I prophesy over your life that your bitter water becomes sweet now in Jesus name. I decree that your tears turn to laughter now in Jesus name. I decree that your disappointment turn now in Jesus name. I command that you receive help for your life now in the name of Jesus. It is well with you.
