May I be bold and ask you a question?
I realise I already did, but let's not allow for digression...
This is important, perhaps you get that impression,
But...what do you think about your salvation?
What does it mean to you that Jesus died?
It seems from one, my questions have multipled.
Do you hear of Jesus' death for you and push it aside?
From an inversion of perversion, hide in your pride?
Do you think that there is no way He could have died for you?
That you are too bad, a Saviour to belong to?
Have you done awful things or simply lived in a lie?
I ask you these questions not to simply pry -
You see as I ask these questions I remember I
was once in the position that you find yourself in,
A semi consciousness, half-awareness of sin.
Perhaps you were half-bought up in Churchin',
Heard the Gospel so many times it had you lurching,
From being a believer in the loosest sense,
Mainly because you heard of Hell and were in suspense,
Scared into a decision that you didn't really make,
And recanted on it so many times that you felt a fake.
Or perhaps you have grown in a country that teaches,
a watered-down Christianity; that allows in-school preaches,
You hated the way that these vicars came talking,
trying to be cool, speaking of love, leaving you baulking,
Sure that you weren't having any of what they were supporting,
It was far too far fetched, you'd rather be walking
the fine line between assurance and fear.
The world was all about getting the best career,
The best house, the best husband, or maybe a wife
At the end of the day you only had this life.
Regardless of which you were, a nagging uncertainity would often arise,
not necessarily obvious, but in a disguise,
It would say 'what happens when you die?'
Do you really go to a place in the sky?
Or do you rot in the ground as a final goodbye?
What happens if I don't believe in this guy?
If you have heard these musings in your inner core,
then some of what I will say here you have heard before,
Because you have been questioning, stood at the door,
backpack on, but not ready to explore.
If you have read this far and you're thinking - nope not me! I implore
that you would keep on reading - just a little more!
Not because I am some weird religious nut with an axe to grind,
But because I am you, or more specifically, you are me, just in rewind.
I cannot tell you how suspicious I was,
When a guy called Phil introduced me to God,
I heard him tell me of this Jesus on a Cross,
And I laughed. What utter.........dross!
How could a MAN dying two thousands years past,
Have an impact on me now, one that would last?
How was a death so gory, a part of my story?
And how would it bring me to glory?!
So now we arrive at the message I want to share,
It would be far too cliche to say that there is 'a God who cares',
Cliche or not it is the truth,
But if you are like I am, you need truth you can't refute.
The truth is that we are all flawed and broken,
And it is something we all know, even if it is unspoken,
There are things we do, or think, or feel,
That we can't admit to for fear that that will make it real.
I am here to say, that's ok,
We all have a part of us that leads to dismay.
That, if we let it, leads us astray.
Some call it human nature and put it down to breedin',
Which I believe may be true, but not in the way that is leadin',
Because the leadin' to poor breedin' happened in Eden,
Where the first two humans were left pleadin',
Simply because they gave into a fake promise, so misleadin',
The devil tricked them into disobeying God's rule.
It seemed so minor, don't eat the fruit - you might ridicule.
But the devastation it caused was unsurmountable,
Choosing desire over God's love left us all accountable
Hence, if you feel that you are too bad for God, you are technically right,
But please don't be offended because where there is darkness, there is also light.
We are all sinful and fallen, it's true!
But the good news is that God also promised to never leave you.
So as God is goodness itself, He cannot lie,
Nor can He simply sit and watch you die,
Knowing that He can offer life eternal,
After all, His feelings for you are paternal.
So God had a plan to put right Adam's wrongs,
It was planned before creation, for He knew of our early swan song.
God needed a way to build a relationship with us again,
Not because He was unable, but because we are...well...men.
Who make mistakes time and time and time and again,
If you agree - can I get an Amen?!
God decided that He would need to be on earth,
So He made His presence known through a virgin birth.
And Jesus knew right from the start,
That His death was planned and was the very heart
of His ministry - in the end He had to depart.
And although I am sure that He was scared,
as He stepped forward, knowing He was not to be spared,
But He did it anyway because of YOU,
not just for the Jew, or the ones who have a clue,
But for those who at first refused, they need Jesus too
And as I'm here to be true...
Let me say, salvation isn't a balm,
That in one instance makes all the voices calm,
Neither does it make life perfect,
(Remember the earth is still in defect),
It is an assurance that you are never alone,
That your sins will forever be atoned.
That you are special, needed and wanted,
That you can go through life undaunted,
Knowing that in His strength you can overcome,
That to your fears you will not succumb,
Because when you are God's, no evil can win,
You are a new life and you can now begin
To live in freedom, not in scum,
Helping others that you used to shun,
Realising that to give is better than to receive,
And finding things aren't often as you first perceive.
Able to forgive and release yourself from hate,
And find yourself with your enemies, able to relate.
No longer having to be the judge,
you will suddenly find allievation of grudge,
And realise that it has been holding you down
As you have slowly, in pity, anger and vengence drowned.
Your freedom comes in finally finding out 'who is 'me'?
And finding the answer at Calvary.
