It was striking to see the nature of Jesus Christ turning up so consistently in a recent reading of Daniel. When, for example, the wise men of Babylon failed to be able to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and Arioch had been instructed to destroy them, we first find Daniel stepping up to protect those whom he could otherwise have viewed as competitors. (seventy five percent of the Book of Daniel deals with the interpretation of dreams and visions) Daniel instead has compassion toward these wise men and intervenes effectively on their behalf..
Later in the same second chapter Daniel informs the king:(v.30) that the interpretation “has not been revealed to me because I have more wisdom….,but so you may understand the thoughts of your heart.” Here we see the quality of humility in Daniel who knew well the king’s impulsive tendency to condemn or exalt based on his subjects’ immediate performance.
In passing it’s also important to see that the title ‘King of Kings’ originates with Nebuchadnezzar in this book and not in the Book of Revelations and that he and Darius each open letters with the greeting used hundreds of years later by Apostle Peter “peace is being multiplied to you.” (Daniel 4 and 6)
In Daniel 5 where the king is desperate to find the meaning of the writing on the wall of the banquet hall, Daniel comes through again but remains unmoved by the gifts offered by the king saying, “Let your gifts be for yourself and give your rewards to another.” Daniel was definitely manifesting a higher nature than was typical of the kingdom of Babylon at the time, but despite his indifference toward reward, the gifts are bestowed anyway, like Solomon being granted the blessings he DIDN’T request.(1 Kings 3,v.11 to 13)
Another demonstration of the nature of Christ occurs in Chapter 9 when Daniel prays for the people, identifying with their sins as Jesus did at his baptism and for us at the cross. Even though Daniel was not personally guilty of the people’s sins he chooses to pray as though he was guilty, “we have sinned….we have done wickedly and rebelled…,” He did not consider himself any better than any of his countrymen.
Lastly for our purposes here in the twelfth chapter Daniel admits before an angelic being that he does not understand the vision he had seen and asks to be instructed. He thus exhibits a teachability that Jesus would also have shown before his parents and the rabbis in the Temple during his formative years.
These virtuous Christlike qualities of compassion, humility, love, purity of motive and submissive teachability begin to accumulate in the character of Daniel at a very young age, foreshadowing and reflecting the likeness of the One who was to come, the awaited Messiah, long prophesied.
