The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
We had been out riding around with her older cousin and her boyfriend. They pulled up in front of my house to drop me off, when her cousin turned around and told her, either you tell him or I will. This is how I learned my very first girlfriend had cheated on me. I’m not sure at 15, I really knew what love was, but I know this was the first time my heart was torn into. I held it together until they pulled off, then I proceeded to fall apart for the first time in my young life. I was crying so loud my mother heard me from inside the house. I heard her coming to the door, and I didn't want her to see me like that, so I took off running down the street. I remember just walking and balling my eyes out. I was way too cool for anyone to see me like that, so I waited until I could pull myself together, then I returned to the house like I was just getting home. This was the first of three times my heart has been broken. The other two were with the deaths of my Grandmother and my son, with the latter the most devastating for sure.
Janice, my wife has always joked with me that I never cry, because she has rarely seen me cry. I guess after my first heart break I just learned to mask my feelings, and not let people see what’s really going on inside. That’s one reason I started writing, and my blog is titled, From My Heart to Yours. Because, trust me, I have one; one that loves so big, it’s a little scary at times. But, I have just not mastered how to let others see what’s going inside. Here, I can sit in the presence of my God, and just share the things I wish I could share face to face. Also from here, I can just share whatever God places on my heart without having to worry about what someone is going to think.
Ever since the writing of my book in January 2009, I have learned how to get in the presence of God, and just listen. Without fail He will give me a message for someone; and many times that someone is me. But, He will help me word it to where it just may help someone else, going through the same struggles I am going through; and by my putting the message in writing, it helps me to understand what the Lord is trying to say. But this morning, I feel there is someone struggling to get over a broken heart. Because I have been there, I know just how difficult this can be. When you are a teenage boy, as I was with my first heartbreak, all it takes is the next pretty girl to give you a little attention. But, as we get older, the heart grows stronger, and we tend to love that much harder; and as I have learned in my own life, love continues to grow the longer our hearts are joined to another. But then, something happens and all of a sudden our heart is shattered into tiny little pieces; and if we are not careful, this can throw us down into a deep dark hole of depression, and the longer we stay there, the deeper the hole gets.
But we DO NOT have to go there. We don’t have to succumb to our feelings of hurt. Yes, the pain is real, but we have a God who has this amazing way of mending our broken hearts. Psalm 34:18 tells us that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Believe me, I experienced every bit of this scripture beginning the morning after my son’s death. Those who have read my book, know the story. As I learned, we serve a wonderful, loving God, who will be there with us every moment we are in pain; and it doesn't happen overnight, but the pain WILL subside, and before we know it, our heart will be like new again; and more than ready and willing to love again. Only this time, I believe we are able to love even more, even stronger than ever before. There is a reason Jesus is called The Great Physician, and when He does heart surgery, He does it right.
So, if you are in need of heart surgery this morning, I have great news; The Doctor is in, and there is no appointment necessary. Simply cry out to Him, and watch in amazement as He performs a miracle in your life. Right now, I could point you to several people, who I know personally, who were divorced after long-term marriages. And today, they are happily married again, and living a wonderful life. In some cases, I was astonished at how quickly they bounced back; how fast their hearts recovered and were ready to find new love. But, that’s EXACTLY how amazing our God is; and just as the Psalmist wrote, “You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,” (Psalm 30:11) Reminds me of that Casting Crowns song that says, “Joy Unspeakable, Faith Unsinkable, Love Unstoppable, Anything is possible.” Oh well, that’s my queue, time to spend a little time in worship this beautiful Sunday morning. Here’s a little song to get you started if you want to join me.
From my heart to yours!
