The first part of Proverbs 14:23 states, All hard work brings a profit. Work in the verse refers to the effort of the person both physical and mental. It means working with passion towards excellence. It does not include influence peddling, and use of manipulation and speculation to generate wealth. Efforts of scammers and con men are not hard work that brings profit. Profits refer not only to the monetary gains we get, but even the experiences and the new knowledge we acquire. Some positions may offer low salary, but the skills we acquire may enable us to move up to a higher position in the future.
I started working in 1985 in a private development institution helping children who have been victimized by paedophiles. Since then, I have worked with more than 10 development-oriented organizations. I worked hard not only to earn, but to hone my skills and acquire knowledge in the process. Work in development organizations does not provide high salary and stable work for a lifetime. Most of the positions are temporary and project-based. Once the project is finished, you have to look for another project or another organization to work for.
I love all the work and the institutions who hired me. Since I love what I am doing, it does not feel work anymore. In 2010, almost 25 years after my first work, I was given opportunities to work outside the Philippines, in other Asian countries (Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar) where the skills I developed were needed. I thank God for leading me in those workplaces and blessing me with co-workers with whom I shared happy and fruitful memories.
Among the Bible characters, Jacob exhibited an unusual passion for work. When he fled from the home of his father-in-law Laban, he said to his wife, “I have worked for your father with all my strength, yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times.” (Gen. 31:6) This is astounding! Working with passion despite the fact he knew he was being cheated. He fled not because he resented how he was cheated, but because the other sons of Laban thought ill of him thinking he is getting more from the properties of their father.
In our modern society, this is unthinkable. We always think of our “rights” as workers. Minor issues can become labor suits that mar workplace relationships. Jacob’s attitude surely has no place in our present society.
To give us the right perspective in working, Paul in his letter to the Colossians stated, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24). Today, if we have obnoxious bosses and unbearable officemates, just have in mind that you are working for the Lord. Just like Jacob, you will be blessed in a manner you cannot imagine.
