WILL THE REAL HELL STAND UP?
Hell in its many terms is a place written of throughout our Bibles. It is a place of torment, of fire, of separation from God. We all believe Hell to be a real place but what is it like? Where is it located? Does it burn forever? Can our imaginations even contemplate Hells reality? So far all I’ve done is ask questions. Have you ever wondered about this place the Bible calls Hell?
The Old Testament translates the term Hell as Sheol. Sheol is the place of the grave, and in some places called gehenna or the infernal. Gehenna or sheol was a place just outside the gates of Jerusalem known as the garbage dump. Here is where trash was burned. Sheol was the place of the dead. Jesus, just after His resurrection went to a place called Abrahams bosom to pick up those who by faith believed God. This was a place with a chasm between it and Sheol where those of unbelief went.
So many names that translate to give a characterization of the place simply called Hell. Satan is the headman in this place though he won’t actually go there until judgment day. He too has many names that attempt to give us a picture of who he is. Is all this confusion or can we know the true facts of Hell?
Heaven is another term used many times in Scripture but do we really know factually what or where heaven is? We definitely know that heaven is a wonderful place while hell is a terrible place. We know that those who believe in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross go to heaven while those unbelievers go to hell. These two facts are true, literal and real. Can you describe either place definitely? Does it really matter in the whole scheme of things?
Now I know that our Bibles tell us that hell (actual translated Greek word Hades and Hebrew word Shell) is a real place. The rich man asked Jesus for just a touch of water while residing in Hades. The devil and his followers will be cast into the bottomless pit and then the Lake of Fire at the final judgment described in the Revelation. All those who were and are bound for heaven seem to be lifted up and taken away. But this really doesn’t say much.
I am not by any means and authority on this subject but it does conjure up some interesting thought. So you might say, “I am a Christian going to heaven so the question of hell is immaterial to me?” That may well be but the question is still real and those unbelievers are going there and that is a fact.
This is where reality sets in and the importance of the question becomes a real priority. You may know someone bound for that place called hell. It really isn’t a joking matter like some might say, “all my friends will be there.” Think of how many we can save from going to that place just by sharing the Gospel with them. I have shared the Gospel with many who simply said they didn’t mind going to hell. Well I believe they do mind as I have witnessed those on their deathbed waiting for that train to hell. These are not good thoughts and as Christians we should be filled with sad emotions when we think of maybe a friend who is bound for hell. “The wages of sin is death.” Death is the grave and the grave is Sheol and Sheol is Hades and both are Hell.
So after all that is said I can say with honesty that I am not sure where or what hell is. What I can scripturally say is hell is not a place a human being wants to go. Hell is a real place. It is not an allegory it is literal. It definitely is a place of torment though in my opinion not continuous fire. Torment comes in many ways and it can be horrible. What I can say for sure is Hell is a place where God will never be. This could be the strongest torment, being eternally separated from God. Loss of fellowship with the creator brings eternal loss. This could be hell.
We can make many assumptions about hell and create an awful place. We may be right but to me hell would be not having the ability to walk with God and all the saints in a most beautiful place called heaven. The real question comes down to belief or unbelief. A believer is a saint and will live eternally in the presence of God. The unbeliever is bound for the place described in Scripture as Hades and death reigns with no possible chance to be with God.
