Elisha’s servant got up early that morning. When he went outside, he saw an army with horses and chariots all around the city. The servant said to Elisha, “Oh, my master, what can we do?” Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid. The army that fights for us is larger than the army that fights for Aram.” Then Elisha prayed and said, “LORD, I ask you, open my servant’s eyes so that he can see.” The LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and the servant saw the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire. They were all around Elisha. – 2 Kings 6:15-17 (ERV)
One of my favorite stories in Scripture has to do with the time that the king of Syria sent a “great army” (2 Kings 6:14) after Elisha the prophet because the king had heard from one of his servants that Elisha was telling “the king of Israel the words that [the king of Syria] spoke in [his] bedroom” (v. 12). To this the king of Syria said, “Go and see where he [Elisha] is, that I may send and get him” (v. 13a); it was reported back to the king that Elisha was “in Dothan” (v. 13b). Then, as verse 14 points out: “Therefore [the king of Syria] sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city” (v. 14). (And then, of course, we pick up with the verses cited above, verses 15-17.)
Think about the overwhelming scene that Elisha’s servant awoke to: a “great army” all around with horses and chariots. (It would probably be the equivalent today of a foreign enemy surrounding the city you live in with tanks and heavy artillery because the leader of that foreign nation heard that it was you who had been giving secret information concerning his military to your President and his cabinet.) Did Elisha seem scared? No, he didn’t. In fact, in relation to the words that he conveyed to his servant to calm his servant’s concerns, it didn’t seem like Elisha was too concerned at all; for, of course, Elisha saw something that the servant had yet to see—the presence of God in his circumstance that gave him assurance that he was not alone; and that, yes, he was truly in God’s hands.
In light of this story, how many of us find ourselves at times today like the servant—concerned with the perceived ‘odds’ that are (or might be) stacked against us at times? Do we only see the physical? Or do we, like Elisha, seek for God to open our eyes (of faith)—to ‘see’ His presence in our lives all around us?
The Lord promises those who seek to take Him at His word and be content with what they have that He “will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5b). Do you believe it? I’m sure Elisha did. And because he did, God revealed His presence to him in a mighty way when he needed him the most.
May we too seek to have our eyes opened so that we can see the greatness of God and His presence in our lives. (He is always closer than we might think at times [see Acts 17:27b].)
For we walk by faith, not by sight. – 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)
The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him [who revere and worship Him with awe] and each of them He delivers. – Psalm 34:7 (AMP)
