Gospel
As I behold my backyard through the window, the beautiful pink roses fill my heart with joy, but that is not the best thing about my garden. The best thing in it is something that reminds me that in another place, there is someone who loves me.
That precious object is a bench, a porch swing bench. My brother, who works as a carpenter, made it himself and hung it from a tree in his backyard. I loved it the very first time I saw it, and asked him to sell one to us. He smiled and answered, “you can have it if you like.” It seemed selfish to accept such a gift, after all, he made it for his family. I offered once more to pay for it, but he refused. “I want you to have it”, he said.
My husband and I have enjoyed many quiet moments swinging on that bench since then. It has become “our place”. A place where we can relax, enjoy each other and talk about our day. But as much as we enjoy it, what matters the most is what it represents: my brother’s love for us.
When I see that bench, I can’t help but think about the cross of Christ, that precious object that brings to mind our true identity and how incredibly loved we are.
In that cross we are reminded of who we were and what that meant for Christ. We were desperately wicked sinners, lovers of iniquity, enemies of God. Our sin is what finally nailed Christ to that cross.
We are reminded of who we are now: new creatures, saved by grace, forgiven, children of God.
It also points out to our destiny. Isn’t it interesting that the cross points toward heaven? We are in this world but we don’t belong to it. Our home is in heaven, where our Savior and Lord is.
Gazing at the cross of Christ makes me feel loved and accepted, no matter what I have been, no matter my present struggles and failures, no matter how unfit I might be to be a citizen of heaven. It reminds me again and again that somewhere, in another place, there is someone who loves me…
